E-sports is the competitive playing of video games. Usually, the competition is held through the multiplayer mode of a video game. The rules of the competition are determined by the software (video game) and external competition regulations, such as the regulations of the competition organizer. E-sports is operated on both personal computers and game consoles. The competition participants are called e-sports athletes, and there can be multiple disciplines for each video game. Most video games are played either as individual sports or team sports. For some video games, there are competitions at both the individual and team levels.
In addition to mastering the actual video game, players need various motor and mental skills to be successful in competition. Motor skills, especially hand-eye coordination and reaction speed, are important for players. Spatial orientation, game overview, game understanding, tactical orientation, perseverance, anticipatory and lateral thinking are some of the mental requirements.
In total, over $1.08 billion in prize money has been awarded in e-sports (as of August 2021).
