Christopher Meloni Confirmed to Return to Law & Order: SVU for the Show’s 600th Episode
Elliot Stabler is coming home again. Christopher Meloni is confirmed to return to Law & Order: SVU as Detective Stabler for the show’s landmark 600th episode this season, and Mariska Hargitay all but gave it away herself days before Season 28 premieres on NBC.
Mariska Hargitay Let the Cat Out of the Bag
Hargitay posted two photos to Instagram showing Meloni back on set, one captioned simply “Who dat?” pointing at the back of a familiar-looking detective, and a selfie with him captioned “Happy 600…”. Neither post confirmed anything outright, but reporting quickly verified what fans already suspected: Meloni is filming his return as Stabler for SVU’s 600th episode, which falls during the show’s upcoming 28th season.
Benson and Stabler’s last on-screen scene together came during SVU’s Season 27 premiere in September 2025, over a year before his confirmed 600th episode return.
A Long History Between Benson and Stabler
Meloni originated Stabler when SVU premiered in 1999, playing Benson’s partner through Season 12 in 2011 before leaving the show. He has made several guest appearances since, spanning Seasons 22 through 26, and returned to the franchise more fully in 2021 to lead the spinoff Law & Order: Organized Crime, which ran for five seasons before NBC cancelled it in April 2026. His most recent SVU appearance came in the Season 27 premiere, where Stabler and Benson reunited at the funeral of their old boss, Captain Donald Cragen, sharing a quiet moment reflecting on their decades of history together.
Don’t Expect a Full-Time Return
SVU showrunner Michele Fazekas confirmed Meloni’s appearance is tied specifically to the 600th episode milestone rather than a bigger arc, saying she doesn’t want to overuse the reunion for its own sake: “I don’t want to stunt it, or do it for no reason.” Fazekas noted she would welcome more Stabler episodes, but scheduling has gotten in the way since Meloni is now starring in the Hulu football drama The Land. Hargitay, for her part, has been open in the past about wishing Meloni had never left the show in the first place. Recalling his contentious 2011 exit in an earlier interview, she admitted, “I tried so hard to broker that, because it didn’t end great with them,” referring to the fallout between Meloni and the show’s producers at the time.
Season 28 of Law & Order: SVU premieres Thursday, October 8 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC, streaming the next day on Peacock. No air date for the 600th episode itself has been announced yet, but with Meloni already back on set, Bensler fans have plenty to look forward to this fall.
