DC Studios Sets New Constantine Movie in Motion, but Keanu Reeves’ Sequel Is in Doubt

DC Studios is moving forward on a new Constantine movie, but according to Deadline, it is not the direct sequel that fans of Keanu Reeves’ 2005 film have been waiting on for decades. The studio has hired Francis Galluppi, who is currently directing Evil Dead Wrath, the next chapter in the Evil Dead franchise that Warner Bros. will distribute on April 7, 2028, to write a screenplay centered on the occult detective John Constantine.

A Writer First, With No Director Attached Yet

Multiple outlets covering Deadline’s report, including MovieWeb, CBR and ComicBook.com, note that the project is still in very early development, with Galluppi brought on only to write a script and no director currently attached. It also has not been said whether this new take is meant to replace the long-gestating direct sequel to 2005’s Constantine, which reportedly still had Reeves and original director Francis Lawrence attached as recently as last month, despite the complications of Warner Bros.’ ongoing merger with Paramount.

Where That Leaves Keanu Reeves’ Constantine 2

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn said last year on the Bobatalks podcast that he had discussed a new Constantine movie with Reeves “on and off,” though he admitted he had not yet read a script. Reeves’ version has reportedly stalled in part because the actor has not been satisfied with the drafts he has seen so far.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, who discussed a potential new Constantine movie with Keanu Reeves

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has said he talked with Keanu Reeves about a new Constantine movie, though no finished script exists yet.

A Galluppi-written reboot would most likely sit inside Gunn’s mainline DC Universe, alongside David Corenswet’s Superman and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart, rather than folding in Reeves’ version. That would not necessarily end Reeves and Lawrence’s take, though. DC has already kept Robert Pattinson’s Batman running on its own separate track outside the DCU, so a Reeves sequel could still happen the same way. Keanu Reeves’ original Constantine is streaming now on HBO Max.
