Guild Wars Afterlife Announced as the Original MMO’s First New Expansion in Almost 20 Years

Twenty-one-year-old Guild Wars is getting new content again. ArenaNet has announced Guild Wars Afterlife, a full paid expansion for Guild Wars Reforged and the first brand-new expansion the original trilogy has seen since 2007’s Eye of the North. The announcement arrives just as ArenaNet is also building the standalone Guild Wars 3, proof that the studio is serious about its promise to keep developing all three Guild Wars games at once.

A Forgotten Land Called Xotecha

Afterlife pulls players away from Tyria and into the Mists, toward a long-lost land known as Xotecha. Recent datamining had fans convinced ArenaNet was reviving the cancelled Utopia campaign, and in a sense they were right: Xotecha draws on that same Mesoamerican-inspired aesthetic, built around jungles, sunken cenotes, and floating ruins. Players join the Order of Moonless Night as they head into the Mists to face a familiar threat returning from the shadows, including rising Nightmares and a wave of Ancient Golems.

Xotecha’s floating ruins and jungle canopies mark a visual departure from the rest of the original Guild Wars trilogy.

Skill-Drafting and an Ever-Changing Dungeon

The centerpiece of Afterlife is the Unformed, a dynamic roguelike dungeon that reshuffles its maps, enemies, and bosses every time a party or solo player with henchmen steps inside. Instead of relying on an existing build, each run starts fresh with a skill-drafting system that lets players pick new abilities from every profession in the game as they clear encounters, so no two trips through the Unformed play out quite the same way. Veteran Tyrian characters can be brought along for the ride, and whatever is earned in a run carries over both into future Unformed attempts and into the rest of Guild Wars.

Release Date, Price, and a New Story

Guild Wars Afterlife launches on January 13, 2027 for PC via Steam, as well as on iOS and Android, and requires the Steam version of Guild Wars Reforged to play. It carries a $30 price tag, though ArenaNet is currently running a preorder discount that brings it down to $24 and bundles in the Vestments of the Order costume as a bonus. Alongside the new dungeon and skill system, ArenaNet says Afterlife tells an entirely new story set deep in the Mists, where memories and dreams start blurring into reality, giving both returning Tyrian veterans and newcomers to Guild Wars Reforged a reason to dive back in before the expansion’s launch day.
