Helldivers 2 Poison Explained: How to Cure It and How to Kill the Noxious Spewer and Scavenger

Arrowhead has unleashed a brand new Terminid sub-faction, and it bites. The Noxious Strain brings the first real Helldivers 2 poison mechanic into the Galactic War, along with a web-spitting monster that takes away your sprint. In this guide, we explain how poison works, how to cure it with stims, why you should never let the bites stack up, how to kill the Noxious Spewer and Noxious Scavenger and which loadout keeps your squad alive in the new bug caves.

Quick answer: Every bite from a Noxious Terminid poisons you. Light poison blurs your vision and drains your health, heavy poison drains it faster and stops you from sprinting. Use a stim to fight it off, but don’t expect a full instant reset, so the best cure is not getting bitten repeatedly. Kill Noxious Scavengers with shotguns, flamethrowers or grenades, and shoot the Noxious Spewer in its unarmored abdomen from a safe distance.

🕷️ What Is the Noxious Strain in Helldivers 2?

The Noxious Strain went live on November 3, 2026. Arrowhead revealed it in an official Ministry of Truth briefing on Steam and on the PlayStation Blog. There was no separate numbered patch for it. The enemies arrived on top of the Devoid of Liberty 7.2.2 build from October 29, which is the version this guide reflects. The Noxious Strain adds two new enemies:

  • Noxious Scavenger: a small, very fast and fragile bug that poisons you with every bite.
  • Noxious Spewer: a hulking, surprisingly quick Spewer that slows you with webs and delivers a stronger poison bite.

At the same time, bug caves got a lot more common. Terminid cave networks can now appear on many more biomes on the Galactic map, from deserts to frozen tundras. Tight tunnels and blind corners are exactly where fast, poisonous bugs are most dangerous.

☠️ How Poison Works in Helldivers 2

When a Noxious bug bites you, a new poison icon appears on your HUD. Arrowhead splits the effect into two levels:

Poison levelWhat happens
Lightly poisonedYour vision starts to haze and the poison slowly eats away at your health.
Heavily poisonedDamage over time increases, your vision hazes and you lose the ability to sprint.

The official briefing keeps it simple, but the community-run Helldivers 2 wiki has dug deeper. According to the wiki, poison is actually three separate statuses: Poison, Heavy Poison and a hidden Poison Vulnerability that builds up with each bite. The wiki lists these values:

  • Base damage: both poison levels tick for a short duration of about six seconds, Heavy Poison also blurs your screen.
  • Poison Vulnerability: stacks up to four times and multiplies poison damage, from 1.4x at one stack up to 4.2x at four stacks.
  • Sprint loss: from three stacks onwards, you can’t sprint while the poison is active.

In plain words, the first bite is annoying, but the fourth one can be deadly. These numbers come from community testing on a page that is still being worked on, so treat them as a guideline rather than official values. Arrowhead may also tune poison in a future patch.

💉 How to Cure Poison in Helldivers 2

There is no special antidote. Arrowhead confirms that your regular stims help cure the poison, which makes them more valuable than ever on Noxious planets. Here is how to use them well:

  • Stim early, not late: according to the wiki, a stim removes two stacks of Poison Vulnerability but doesn’t stop poison that is already ticking. Stimming after the second bite keeps you out of the dangerous high stacks.
  • Don’t stim to get your sprint back: the wiki notes that a stim doesn’t restore sprint while poison from a high stack is still active. Get out of melee range first.
  • Stim your teammates: you can stim a squadmate, and Arrowhead specifically reminds players that a poisoned teammate may need that stim more than you.
  • Carry more stims: armor with the Med-Kit passive increases the number of stims you carry by two and makes each stim last two seconds longer.
  • Bring a resupply: the B-1 Supply Pack refills ammo, grenades and stims for you and your squad, which is a big help in long cave fights.

Fire and spread weapons are your best friends against fast Noxious Scavengers.

🦂 How to Kill Noxious Scavengers

Noxious Scavengers look like normal Scavengers, but they are noticeably faster and can bite again almost immediately. According to the wiki, they replace regular Scavengers and Pouncers on planets held by the Noxious Strain. The good news is that they are fragile:

  • Use volume over precision: Arrowhead itself recommends shotguns, flamethrowers and grenades. Picks like the SG-225 Breaker, SG-8 Punisher, SG-451 Cookout or the FLAM-40 Flamethrower all work well.
  • Kill them first: a single Scavenger chewing on your flank can push you from light to heavy poison while you are busy with bigger targets.
  • Throw grenades early: a grenade into a pack before it reaches you is cheaper than the stim you would need afterwards.

🕸️ How to Kill the Noxious Spewer

The Noxious Spewer is the big threat of the new strain. The wiki lists it as a variant of the Nursing Spewer that shows up from difficulty 5 (Hard), but it doesn’t play like one. It moves fast and has three dangerous attacks:

  • Web Spit: its medium range attack. One hit and you lose the ability to sprint, which lets the Spewer close the gap.
  • Bite: quick, with surprising reach and a stronger dose of poison than any Scavenger bite.
  • Web Explosion: when its web-filled sac bursts, it snares every Helldiver and every bug nearby.

The key to beating it is its armor. The head is protected by medium armor, but the abdomen has no armor at all. That means you don’t need anti-tank weapons. Even light armor-penetrating primaries can kill it if you hit the abdomen. Just do it from a distance. If you pop the sac at close range, the Web Explosion will snare you along with the bugs.

You can also use that explosion to your advantage. Since it snares bugs too, bursting a Spewer while it runs through a pack of Scavengers can lock down the whole group for your squad.

Bug caves can now show up on many more biomes, and the Noxious Strain loves the dark.

💡 Best Loadout Tips Against the Noxious Strain

  • Primary: a shotgun or another spread weapon for Scavengers in tight spaces.
  • Support weapon: a flamethrower is great in caves, where bugs have to come through narrow tunnels.
  • Armor: a Med-Kit passive for the extra stims.
  • Backpack: the B-1 Supply Pack keeps the squad stocked with stims during long fights.
  • Teamwork: stay together in caves. Arrowhead’s own advice is to bring close range firepower, stick with your squad and keep a stim ready for whoever runs too far ahead.

Mods that used to help with visibility might not work anymore since Helldivers 2 switched to Easy Anti-Cheat, so plan your loadout around the vanilla game.

❓ Helldivers 2 Poison FAQ

Do stims cure poison in Helldivers 2?

Yes, Arrowhead confirms that stims help cure poison. According to the community wiki, a stim reduces your poison build-up but doesn’t instantly stop the current poison damage, so it is best to stim early.

Why can’t I sprint in Helldivers 2?

If you are fighting the Noxious Strain, you have either been hit by a Noxious Spewer’s Web Spit or you are heavily poisoned. Both take away your sprint for a while.

Where is the Noxious Spewer’s weak spot?

Its web-filled abdomen has no armor. Shoot it from medium range so the Web Explosion doesn’t snare you.

Which enemies cause poison in Helldivers 2?

Poison is only caused by the Noxious Strain, meaning the Noxious Scavenger and the Noxious Spewer.

  • My experience with the heavy toxin varied greatly depending on the player’s health. A certain level of armor makes it much easier to recover from the damage. I found that using the wrong stim type could actually worsen the situation.
