Overwatch’s Jetpack Cat and Bastion Combo Was ‘A Little Scary’ Even in Testing, Devs Admit
Almost a year ago, Team 4 unveiled a reworked vision for Overwatch, introducing a new yearly cadence of seasonal themes alongside a wave of five new heroes: Mizuki, Emre, Anran, Domina, and a flying feline support hero nicknamed Jetpack Cat. Players were instantly charmed by the idea of a small ginger cat piloting a flying mech, but that affection curdled fast once Jetpack Cat hit the battlefield and revealed just how disruptive her kit could be.
The Apache Helicopter Meta That Broke Overwatch
Jetpack Cat’s signature trick is her ability to carry another hero through the air, and it did not take the community long to discover the nightmare pairing: hauling Bastion high above the fight so he could lock into turret form and mow down the enemy team from a position nobody could easily punish. Fans quickly nicknamed it the Apache helicopter meta, and adding Mercy into the mix for sustained healing made the trio even harder to deal with.
According to Overwatch associate game director Alec Dawson, Team 4 was not blindsided by how strong the combo turned out to be. The studio had already noticed the danger during internal playtesting, well before Jetpack Cat and Bastion ever faced real players together. Once live, the pairing dominated Overwatch Champions Series play almost immediately, becoming one of the fastest hero strategies to take over the competitive scene in recent memory.

Team fights in Overwatch can shift dramatically once a strong hero combo like Jetpack Cat and Bastion enters the mix.
Why Team 4 Let the Combo Run Wild First
Despite seeing the warning signs early, Dawson says the team deliberately held off on an immediate nerf. Internally, Team 4 had flagged the Jetpack Cat and Bastion pairing as “a little scary” during testing, but chose to ship it anyway so players could experience the chaos firsthand before any balance pass smoothed it out. The studio has since walked the combo back somewhat, most notably by slowing how quickly Jetpack Cat can move while carrying another hero, which has taken some of the edge off without removing the strategy entirely.
The reasoning ties into a broader philosophy Dawson described for how Team 4 approaches new hero releases: giving players a window to enjoy a hero’s most extreme, memorable moments before reining in the power level. The goal is to avoid diluting the fun too early, even if it means living with an overtuned combo for a little while. Jetpack Cat and Bastion can still be a handful today, but the pairing no longer dictates the meta the way it did in its first weeks.
