Robert Pattinson Says The Batman Part II Takes a ‘Real Left Turn’ From the First Film
Robert Pattinson has given the clearest look yet at how different The Batman Part II will feel from Matt Reeves’ 2022 original. In comments reported by Collider on September 22, the actor described the sequel’s screenplay as a genuine departure from the first film, even while it keeps a version of that movie’s DNA intact.
A “Real Left Turn” From the Original
Asked to compare the two scripts, Pattinson said, “It’s a real left turn from the first one.” He described the Part II screenplay as impossibly dense, packed with more story and ideas than feels possible to fit into a single film, while still carrying over the tone that made the first movie work. It’s the most direct confirmation yet that Reeves isn’t simply repeating the noir detective formula that defined the 2022 film.

Matt Reeves Is Leaning Into Gotham’s Gray Areas
Director Matt Reeves has described a Gotham that’s grown messier since the flood that closed out the first film, with the corruption revealed in its final act still rippling through the city. He’s said the story picks up with a lot more unrest and division among Gotham’s people as they reckon with what was uncovered. “When things are in gray, it makes it very hard to be Batman,” Reeves said, framing that moral murkiness as the central challenge Bruce Wayne has to work through this time around.
Where Things Stand on Release and Casting
The Batman Part II is currently filming in and around London, based out of Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, with production underway since June. The film has been pushed back twice since its original October 2025 target, first to October 2027 and then to its current February 18, 2028 release date, a delay Reeves marked by unveiling camera test footage of Pattinson in the suit against a snowy Gotham backdrop.
Pattinson returns alongside Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb (the Penguin), Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, and Andy Serkis as Alfred, the core of the first film’s cast all confirmed to be back. Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and Sebastian Koch have all joined the sequel as well, though Warner Bros. and Reeves haven’t officially confirmed which characters most of them are playing, despite plenty of competing reports naming everyone from Gotham DA Harvey Dent to Victor Zsasz. Barry Keoghan is widely expected to reprise his Joker tease from the first film’s extended cut, but that return also hasn’t been confirmed outright by Keoghan, Reeves, or the studio.
