Wing Commander 3 Remaster Reportedly in the Works After EA Finds 600 Lost FMV Tapes
Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger’s famously grainy, heavily compressed full motion video cutscenes may finally get the restoration fans have wanted for decades. At the Portland Retro Gaming Expo this past weekend, longtime EA producer Jim Vessella revealed during a panel that he uncovered over 600 original production source tapes for the 1994 space combat classic while digitizing the publisher’s physical video archive, and that a remaster built around that footage is reportedly in the works.
Hundreds of Tapes, Decades in Storage
Vessella’s panel, titled “The Lost Tapes: Preserving the EA Vault and Restoring an FMV Classic,” detailed how the original Wing Commander 3 footage, shot as a multi million dollar Hollywood production starring Mark Hamill, Malcolm McDowell, Tim Curry, John Rhys-Davies and Ginger Lynn Allen, had been compressed down to a blocky 240p for the game’s original CD-ROM release. Neither the PS1 nor 3DO ports improved on that quality, and unlike Wing Commander 4, the third game never got a DVD-era re-release with cleaner video, leading many fans to assume the uncompressed masters were lost for good. News of the find was first reported by the fan community site Wing Commander CIC after attendees, including Video Game History Foundation board member Steve Lin, shared photos of Vessella’s presentation slides online.

Wing Commander 3’s original 1994 space combat, the footage a planned remaster would leave untouched while rebuilding the FMV cutscenes around it.
What a 30th Anniversary Edition Could Include
Slides from the presentation reportedly referenced a “30th anniversary edition” of Wing Commander 3, which would offer both the raw restored source footage and a new AI-upscaled version of the FMV sequences, a frame rate boost of up to 60 FPS, and some form of “Kilrathi Saga integration.” Multiple outlets that covered the panel note it is not clear what that last point actually means, with the most common guess being that Wing Commander 1 and 2 and their expansions could be bundled alongside the third game, though EA has not spelled out the details. The branding is also a bit odd on its own terms, since Wing Commander 3 launched in March 1994, making this year its 32nd anniversary rather than its 30th, a discrepancy none of the outlets covering the slides have been able to explain.
Reporting on the slides also points to controller support and a digital release across Steam, GOG and the EA app, alongside an enhancement patch reportedly being built with input from long-time Wing Commander fan archivists. None of this has been confirmed by EA itself, however. There is no official press release, no release date, no price, and no confirmed platform list beyond what attendees read off a projector screen, so all of the above should be treated as a reported work in progress rather than a finished announcement.
