Krafton Cancels Extraction Shooter PUBG: Black Budget Less Than a Year After Its Reveal
Krafton has canceled PUBG: Black Budget, the extraction shooter spin-off that PUBG Studios had been testing since late 2025. The decision was confirmed through an official Steam news post on October 1, less than a year after the game was first revealed and only a few months after its second closed alpha test wrapped up in June.
The Official Reason, in Krafton’s Own Words
PUBG Studios didn’t go into much detail, framing the cancellation as the outcome of an internal review rather than pointing to any single failure. In its statement, the team said the project “would not allow us to deliver an experience players could enjoy over the long term,” and thanked everyone who took part in the closed alpha tests for their feedback.
A Second PUBG Spin-Off Axed This Year
Black Budget is now the second PUBG spin-off Krafton has shut down in 2026. PUBG: Blindspot, a top-down tactical shooter, launched into Early Access on February 5 and was shut down just 54 days later on March 30. At the time, the development team called the project “a bold attempt to explore new possibilities within the top-down tactical shooter space,” while acknowledging it could no longer sustain the experience it had promised players.

Why Extraction Shooters Are a Tough Sell Right Now
Krafton hasn’t spelled out exactly what went wrong beyond its official statement, but the cancellation lands in an extraction shooter market that has gotten considerably more crowded since Black Budget was first revealed. Arc Raiders, Marathon, Escape from Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown are all competing directly for the same players’ attention, and PUBG Studios says it plans to carry the lessons from both canceled spin-offs into its future projects instead of forcing Black Budget’s current direction to work.
