Mike Flanagan’s Carrie Reimagines Stephen King’s Classic for the Social Media Era, and Even King Calls It ‘Brilliant’
Mike Flanagan’s take on Stephen King’s Carrie arrived in full on Prime Video this week, with all eight episodes of the series dropping on October 7. The adaptation reimagines King’s 1974 novel for 2026, building its horror around viral bullying and social media rather than retelling the story beat for beat, and the early reactions, including from King himself, have been overwhelmingly positive.
A New Carrie for the Social Media Age
Carrie White (Summer H. Howell) has spent her life isolated from the outside world by her strict, deeply religious mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan). After her father dies suddenly, Carrie starts attending public high school for the first time, where she’s pulled into a bullying scandal fueled by social media just as her telekinetic powers begin to surface during adolescence. Flanagan, who serves as showrunner with King on board as executive producer, has described building the series around a simple instinct: wanting to “take something apart, and build something new out of familiar pieces.” He’s said the idea took shape while thinking about the world his own son was stepping into starting high school, from active shooter drills to how normalized cruelty has become online.

Carrie’s new high school life gets tense fast in Flanagan’s modernized adaptation.
Critics, and Stephen King Himself, Are On Board
Early reactions out of advance screenings have leaned heavily positive. JoBlo’s JimmyO wrote that “Mike Flanagan has given new life to Stephen King’s Carrie,” while critic Tessa Smith of Mama’s Geeky said “this is not at all what you are expecting,” singling out Howell’s performance. Stephen King himself weighed in on Threads, calling the series “brilliant” and praising its portrayal of social media as accurate and unsettling. It’s not the first time Flanagan and King have worked together. The two previously collaborated on Doctor Sleep and The Life of Chuck, and King serves as an executive producer on Carrie as well.

Carrie finds herself at the center of a very public, very online scandal in the modernized series.
Cast and Episode Details
Alongside Howell and Sloyan, the main cast includes Siena Agudong as Carrie’s classmate Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, and Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross. All eight episodes are streaming now, with titles structured like a high school class schedule: “First Period,” “Foreign Language,” “Social Studies,” “Dramatic Arts,” “Physical Education,” “Home Economics,” “Romantic Literature,” and “AP Physics.”
With King’s blessing and strong early buzz behind it, Carrie looks like one of Prime Video’s stronger horror swings this fall, and a reminder that Flanagan remains one of the most reliable names in King adaptations.
