Netflix’s Society of the Snow Follow-Up Beyond Society Sets a December Release Date
J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow told the story of the 1972 Andes plane crash through the eyes of the survivors and the friends who didn’t make it home. Netflix has now confirmed a follow-up that picks up where that film left off: Beyond Society, a three-part documentary series arriving globally on December 18, 2026, that follows the real survivors and victims’ families in the fifty years since the crash.
What Beyond Society Is About
Most retellings of the Andes disaster end with the rescue. Beyond Society starts there instead, tracing what came after for the sixteen men who survived and the families of those who didn’t, as their private tragedy turned into one of the most retold survival stories in the world. The series is created by Bayona and Carlos Torres, who also directs, and brings in author Piers Paul Read, who wrote the 1974 book Alive, and Pablo Vierci, who wrote the book Society of the Snow is based on, along with filmmaker Frank Marshall, director of the 1993 film adaptation of Alive.

Beyond Society follows survivors and families back to the crash site fifty years after Flight 571 went down in the Andes.
Bayona and the Cast Return to the Valley of Tears
As part of making the series, Bayona brought members of the Society of the Snow cast back to the Andes crash site, known as the Valley of Tears, many of them for the first time. “We decided to travel to the Valley of Tears with the film’s cast,” Bayona said of how the project came together, describing the trip as a way to close an important chapter and thank the real survivors who trusted the production with their story.
Society of the Snow’s Awards Run
Society of the Snow arrived on Netflix in January 2024 and went on to win 12 Goya Awards, a record haul at Spain’s top film honors, along with two Academy Award nominations, for Best International Feature Film and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Beyond Society leans on that same team and cast to revisit the story from the other side of the camera.
When You Can Watch It
Beyond Society had its festival premiere as a special screening at the 2026 San Sebastián International Film Festival, running September 18 through 26, ahead of its global Netflix release on December 18, 2026.
