Fable’s Director Says the Decade-Long Reboot Ditched ‘Traditional Fantasy Clichés,’ and Explains Why Xbox Calls It Vital to the Platform
Fable has been in development at Playground Games since Microsoft closed original creator Lionhead Studios back in 2016, and in a new interview with The Guardian, the team is finally explaining what nearly a decade of work on the reboot actually looked like. Studio co-founder and Fable director Ralph Fulton laid out why the Forza Horizon team wanted to break from the genre’s usual clichés, and why Xbox sees the RPG as far more than just another exclusive.
A Decade Spent Rebuilding an RPG From Scratch
Playground Games signed on to revive Fable the year after Lionhead’s closure, and the studio has spent the years since building an entirely new team and pipeline for a genre it had never touched before. Fulton described standing up that second studio as one of the hardest things the team has ever attempted, on top of the pressure of following a beloved trilogy that hadn’t seen a mainline entry since 2010. The reboot has also been delayed more than once since its original 2020 announcement, first slipping out of a targeted 2025 window and then out of 2026 entirely, before Xbox locked in its current release date this past May.

Ditching the Genre’s Usual Clichés
Coming off five entries in the Forza Horizon series, Fulton admitted there was some genuine pride riding on proving the studio could work outside of racing games entirely, leaning on the open-world expertise it had built over more than a decade instead of starting from zero. That confidence apparently extended to how Fable’s world would sound and feel too, with Fulton explaining the team wanted to steer away from genre conventions on the writing side: “We were a bit bored of traditional fantasy clichés.”
Why Xbox Calls Fable “Vital”
Fulton also touched on how much weight the project carries internally, describing Fable as a game plenty of people inside Xbox consider central to the platform’s identity rather than just another first-party release. That framing lines up with how much runway Xbox has given the project, letting it slip past multiple internal targets rather than rushing a launch, and with the decision to bring the game to PlayStation 5 alongside Xbox and PC, a notable shift from the exclusivity Fable would have carried a decade ago.
Release Date and Cast
Fable launches February 23, 2027, on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and PS5, with day-one availability on Game Pass. The cast leans heavily on British comedy talent, including Matt King, Richard Ayoade and Natasia Demetriou, alongside Hayley Atwell voicing the game’s villain, Isabel.
Whether ditching the genre’s usual tropes pays off is still an open question five months out, but after a decade of false starts, Playground Games at least sounds like a studio that knows exactly what kind of Fable it set out to make.
