Michael Mann’s ‘Heat 2’ Delayed Again as Stephen Graham Reveals New Start Date

Fans have waited more than three decades for Michael Mann to revisit the world of Heat, and the wait just got a little longer. Stephen Graham, who takes over the role of Neil McCauley from Robert De Niro in Heat 2, confirmed during an appearance on The Today Show that the long-gestating sequel has slipped its production schedule once again, this time to January.

Stephen Graham Confirms a New Start Date

Graham was on the show to promote his upcoming Apple TV thriller series Nocturne, in which he plays an imprisoned serial killer, when the conversation turned to his other high-profile project. Asked about Heat 2, the Adolescence star kept details close to the chest but did confirm the timeline, saying, “Heat 2, I think we start in January.” When pushed for more, he added that working alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, and Michael Mann felt like an honor he still could not quite believe.

A Bumpy Road From Warner Bros. to Amazon MGM

Heat 2 has been in the works in some form for years, based on the 2022 novel Mann co-wrote with Meg Gardiner that functions as both a prequel and a sequel to the 1995 original. Mann once hoped to shoot the film in August, only for that target to slip to November, and now, according to Graham, to January. The production has also changed studios along the way, with Warner Bros. balking at the proposed budget and the project ultimately moving forward at Amazon MGM Studios instead.

Heat 2’s Stacked Cast

Despite the delays, Heat 2 has assembled one of the more stacked casts in recent memory. Christian Bale steps into Al Pacino’s old role as Detective Vincent Hanna, while Leonardo DiCaprio takes over Chris Shiherlis from the late Val Kilmer. Graham plays Neil McCauley, originally De Niro’s part, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Odessa Young round out the returning character roster as Kelso and Charlene, respectively. New to the story are Adam Driver as the sociopathic Otis Wardell and Maria Cid as Gabriela, both original characters introduced in Gardiner and Mann’s novel. No release date has been set for Heat 2, while the original Heat recently found a new streaming home on Netflix.
