This Deus Ex Mod Turns JC Denton Into a Third-Person, Max Payne-Style Gunslinger

Deus Ex has always been a first-person affair at heart, but a fan-made project is giving Ion Storm’s cyberpunk classic a completely different feel. Over the past week or so, a modder going by dan2091 has been posting videos of a work-in-progress mod that lets players experience the game in third person, complete with some surprisingly slick, Max Payne-style moves.

More Than a Simple Camera Switch

The mod’s videos show it going well beyond just pulling the camera back. One clip demonstrates a system that lets JC Denton wear different outfits, built on top of the existing Augmentique mod, taking advantage of the fact that players can now actually see their own character. Another video shows bespoke ladder climbing animations, while a third introduces a new dual-wielding system that works whether the player is in first or third person.

The mod ties into the existing Augmentique project to let JC Denton change outfits now that his whole body is visible on screen.

Borrowing a Move or Two From Max Payne

What stands out most across the clips is how nimble JC becomes in his third-person form. He can roll and shoot-dodge while blasting enemies with dual pistols in a way that looks lifted straight out of Max Payne, and according to dan2091, that is pretty much exactly what happened: the creator says they used AI to help port over some of Max Payne’s animations onto Deus Ex’s moveset. The grungy, dilapidated aesthetic the two games share makes the borrowed moves fit surprisingly well.

It is not the first time Deus Ex has flirted with a different point of view. Both Human Revolution and Mankind Divided switched to a third-person camera during cover and takedowns, and even the original game briefly left first person for its dialogue scenes. A fully third-person take is still a new spin, though, and one that fans of the original seem curious to try.

One of the Few New Things Happening in the Series

Official Deus Ex news has been thin on the ground for years. A new entry from Eidos Montreal was reportedly cancelled by Embracer Group, and Adam Jensen voice actor Elias Toufexis has said fans should not expect the series to return anytime soon. With that in mind, fan projects like dan2091’s third-person mod are currently one of the few ways to see the franchise’s world from a genuinely new angle, even if it is still very much a work in progress with no release date attached.
