Hideo Kojima Casts Bill Skarsgård as Physint’s Lead, and Teases a New Cold War
Hideo Kojima used Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show 2026 online showcase to reveal the biggest piece of casting news yet for Physint, confirming that actor Bill Skarsgård, best known for playing Pennywise in the two “It” films, will play the game’s lead role. The announcement, posted on Kojima Productions’ own website on September 17, arrived alongside a new tagline for the espionage project and a fresh reminder that it still doesn’t have a release date.
A Fourth Actor Joins the Cast
Skarsgård is the fourth actor confirmed for Physint, joining Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe, who were unveiled together back in 2025. Don Lee is better known to Western audiences as Ma Dong-seok, the “Train to Busan” star who previously popped up as a cameo prepper character in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, making this his second connection to a Kojima Productions game.

Kojima on Casting His Lead
Kojima framed the casting as a meeting of mutual admirers, saying “we are both long-time fans of each other’s work” before deciding to work together on the project. He added that costume fittings, body scans, and camera tests conducted with Skarsgård and Fraser earlier in the year had given him confidence in the direction Physint is heading, suggesting performance capture will play a central role in how the actors are brought into the game.
“The Next Cold War Begins”
Alongside the cast news, Kojima Productions attached a new tagline to the project: “The Next Cold War Begins,” a phrase that leans into the same geopolitical espionage territory Kojima explored decades earlier in Metal Gear Solid 3. Kojima described Physint as representing more than 40 years of his career as a game creator, and said the goal is to redefine the action-espionage genre rather than simply revisit familiar ground. He also gave a brief update on his other Xbox-published project, the horror title OD, saying development on it continues to progress steadily.
From a PlayStation Exclusive to an Xbox Partnership
Physint was originally revealed as a PlayStation project, but Sony ended its involvement with the game back in June, before Xbox formally stepped in as publisher on September 9. Reports have suggested the switch also comes with an engine change behind the scenes, with Unreal Engine 5 reportedly replacing Decima Engine now that the PlayStation-era tooling is out of the picture, though Kojima Productions hasn’t detailed that shift itself. Capcom held its own Spotlight showcase earlier in Tokyo Game Show week, but Kojima’s cast reveal was easily the showcase’s biggest surprise for Xbox.
Still no release window has been announced for Physint, and Kojima Productions has given no indication of when that might change.
