Heat 2 Director Michael Mann Hospitalized After Accidentally Shooting Himself at L.A. Gun Range

Michael Mann is currently deep in preparations for Heat 2, but the veteran director’s week took an unexpected turn over the weekend. Mann was hospitalized on Saturday afternoon after his gun accidentally discharged while he was holstering it at a gun range in West Los Angeles, according to a statement from his representatives.

A Superficial Injury at The Range L.A.

The incident took place around 4 PM at The Range L.A., a shooting range near Sawtelle Japantown, and was first reported by TMZ. Mann’s reps confirmed he suffered only a superficial wound to the leg when the weapon fired as he was attempting to put it back in its holster. Police and paramedics responded to the scene, and the 83 year old filmmaker, who is described as an experienced target shooter, was treated at the scene and released shortly after. Mann has not commented on the incident himself.

Mann Is Still Gearing Up for Heat 2

The accident comes as Mann continues prepping his long awaited crime sequel Heat 2, which has already slipped its production schedule multiple times and is now reportedly aiming to begin filming in January. The Amazon MGM project reunites Mann with Adam Driver, his lead actor on 2023’s Ferrari, and brings in Christian Bale, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Odessa Young to continue the story of Mann’s 1995 classic Heat. Mann’s other films include Collateral, The Insider, and Manhunter. Nothing about this weekend’s incident is expected to affect the Heat 2 production timeline.
