Netflix’s WWII Drama The Mosquito Bowl Gets Theatrical Release Ahead of November Streaming Debut
Netflix’s new approach to theatrical releases keeps gaining momentum. The streamer has confirmed that The Mosquito Bowl, the WWII drama from director Peter Berg, will open in theaters on October 30 before arriving on Netflix on November 25, making it the latest handpicked awards contender to get a proper big-screen rollout instead of a simultaneous streaming debut.
Part of a Bigger Theatrical Push
Netflix has been experimenting with limited theatrical runs for a while, but the recent release of La Bola Negra marked a clear shift toward treating certain titles as genuine theatrical events, including reporting their box-office grosses, with that film receiving a record 47 day theatrical window before heading to Netflix on December 2. The Mosquito Bowl continues that streak, and it won’t be alone for long. David Fincher and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood spin-off, The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, gets an extended IMAX run starting November 25 ahead of its own Netflix premiere on December 23, while next year’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is also being planned as a full theatrical release.

A True Story Between Football and the Battle of Okinawa
The Mosquito Bowl is based on a true story and stars Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Galitzine, Ray Nicholson and Tom Francis as Marines who play in a legendary pickup football game in the days leading up to the brutal Battle of Okinawa. Behind the camera is Peter Berg, a veteran Netflix collaborator who previously worked with the streamer on the action comedy Spenser Confidential, the Western limited series American Primeval, and the series Painkiller, and who has mixed military and sports storytelling before in Friday Night Lights, Lone Survivor and Battleship. The film arrives on the back of a strong run for WWII content at Netflix, following the awards player Nuremberg, which has grossed over 71 million dollars worldwide, the sleeper hit war drama Pressure, and the documentary series World War II with Tom Hanks, which became a major hit this summer. With The Mosquito Bowl hitting theaters on October 30 and Netflix on November 25, fans won’t have to wait long to see how this true story of football and war plays out.
