Rockstar Staff Will Vote on Union Recognition the Same Month GTA 6 Launches
Rockstar employees in the UK will vote on union recognition over a two week window in November that lines up almost exactly with Grand Theft Auto VI’s console launch. The ballot runs from November 12 to 26, the week before and the week after Rockstar’s November 19 release date, and if it passes, the IWGB Rockstar Game Workers Union becomes the biggest recognised union in the UK games industry.
What Recognition Would Actually Change
A successful vote would give Rockstar staff a formal, legally backed channel to negotiate with management on pay and bonuses, overtime, redundancies, flexible working arrangements, and the studio’s policies on generative AI. Those negotiating terms have reportedly been worked out between the union and Rockstar since July, even as the underlying organising campaign stretches back years further.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, with a PC version still unannounced.
The Firings That Triggered the Union Drive
The vote is the latest chapter in a dispute that began in October 2025, when Rockstar dismissed 31 UK employees the IWGB describes as the most brazen act of union busting the games industry has seen. Rockstar has maintained the workers were fired for leaking GTA 6 information in a public Discord server, an allegation the union disputes, and the matter has been working its way through an employment tribunal in Scotland ever since, with testimony from Rockstar’s own leadership among the evidence heard so far.
A Tribunal Clock Running Alongside the Vote
That tribunal was expected to wrap up in mid-October, but Rockstar’s legal team requested more time to cross-examine fired employees, and the judge granted the extension. Closing submissions are now scheduled for November 17 and 18 in Glasgow, just one day before GTA VI’s console launch, meaning the recognition vote, the tribunal’s final sessions, and the game’s release will all land within days of each other. A written ruling likely won’t follow immediately after.
Rockstar Hasn’t Commented on the Vote Itself
Rockstar has not issued a public statement about the November recognition ballot. The clearest signal of the studio’s position instead comes from a recent Bloomberg feature on the making of GTA 6, where Rockstar head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe addressed the union question directly.
“We go where the team goes.”

Kolbe went on to say that if staff want a union, they will have one, language the IWGB has welcomed but says it still wants formally confirmed through the ballot itself. Union committee member Shanti Easton-Steel framed the vote as a parallel milestone to the game’s launch, while IWGB president Alex Marshall called it a choice about whether workers get a say in how their day to day working lives are organised.
