Rockstar Reveals GTA 6’s NPCs Have 600,000 Animations and a Map Nearly as Big as Its Last Three Games Combined

Rockstar has pulled back the curtain on Grand Theft Auto VI in a new cover feature from Edge magazine, published this Thursday, October 29, giving the clearest look yet at two of the project’s most ambitious systems: how its non-player characters actually think, and just how big its world really is. The details come from Rockstar North co-studio heads Aaron Garbut and Rob Nelson.

Six Hundred Thousand Animations, One Personality Each

According to Edge, Rockstar assembled an entire Los Angeles-based team of writers, directors, and producers dedicated solely to the game’s pedestrians, moving away from the older approach of assembling interchangeable crowds out of a shared pool of parts. The result is around 600,000 individually art-directed animations, with each pedestrian built around traits like temperament and aggression that shift depending on where they are, what they have witnessed, and how the player has treated them in the past. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has described the goal as giving every NPC its own read on how much of a threat the player poses and whether they are worth confronting, with districts across Leonida carrying their own demographic and professional character to match.

Grand Theft Auto VI’s Extended Look trailer offered an early glimpse of the character work Rockstar has poured into Leonida ahead of the game’s November 19 launch.

A Map Almost as Big as Rockstar’s Last Three Games Put Together

The same feature puts hard numbers behind just how large Vice City and the surrounding Leonida map actually are, describing it as almost matching the combined size of Grand Theft Auto 4, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Red Dead Redemption 2. Garbut told Edge that the map also contains an order of magnitude more interiors than any of the studio’s previous games, and that the goal was density rather than empty space, with every back alley meant to feel as considered as any other and random locations across the map built as though someone had actually thought about them. Garbut pointed to the muted reception of Grand Theft Auto 5’s quieter rural stretches, like the Senora Desert, as part of what shaped how Leonida’s own outer regions were designed this time around.

“Built a Pyramid on Everest”

Garbut also addressed the sheer weight of expectation riding on Grand Theft Auto VI, thirteen years on from the series’ previous mainline entry. He said the team never considered shipping anything that merely matched what players might expect, insisting there had been no compromises on scale, detail, interactivity, story, or the open world itself.

“I feel like we’ve built a pyramid on Everest.”

Grand Theft Auto VI is still on track for November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Rockstar’s UK staff also voting on union recognition that same month. A PC release date has yet to be announced. Edge’s full feature covers considerably more ground than NPCs and map size alone, but these two details alone make clear just how much Rockstar is leaning on sheer scale and craft to justify well over a decade of anticipation.

  • The map size seems excessive for a game with this many moving parts. I noticed that the city density might cause loading issues on older hardware.
