Rockstar Reveals GTA 6’s Criminal Profile System Will Affect the Story, Scaling From ‘Professional’ to ‘Irredeemable’
Rockstar’s cover feature with Edge magazine, published this Thursday, October 29, has already detailed Grand Theft Auto VI’s relationship system, its roughly 600,000 NPC animations, and a map that nearly matches the combined size of Rockstar’s last three releases. The same deep dive also goes further than any previous preview on the GTA 6 Criminal Profile system, with Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson confirming for the first time that it will directly affect how the story plays out.
A Scale From Professional to Irredeemable
According to the Edge feature, Jason and Lucia’s actions as Leonida’s most wanted couple are tracked on a scale running from “Professional” at one end to “Irredeemable” at the other, shown to players through angel and devil icons. The system doesn’t ask players to be saints who avoid every fight, but it does pay attention to how much violence they hand out and whether it was actually necessary.
Not every confrontation has to end in a body count. A more professional criminal might knock an opponent out, intimidate them, or bribe their way out of a situation instead of reaching for a gun first. Small, everyday acts of decency can pull the needle back the other way too, Nelson has pointed out that something as minor as putting litter in a bin or spending a moment at the park can count in a player’s favor.

Jason and Lucia keep entirely separate Criminal Profiles in Grand Theft Auto VI, so one half of the couple can stay disciplined while the other spirals.
Your Choices Will Shape the Story
Earlier previews from outlets invited to see the game behind closed doors described a similar system with four named tiers plus a rare, unnamed state where a shattered profile icon locks in place for good. What Edge’s new interview adds is Rockstar actually confirming that the Criminal Profile affects how Grand Theft Auto VI’s narrative pans out, not just how NPCs react in the moment, something earlier previews could only speculate about. Nelson frames it as a tool for roleplaying rather than a strict morality test, noting that “consistent actions may have an impact in terms of how the world reacts to you.”
The system builds on the same Edge feature that detailed Grand Theft Auto VI’s NPCs and map, and sits alongside Jason and Lucia’s four-point relationship scale as another system meant to make Leonida feel like it’s actually keeping score.
