How Rockstar Rolled Out the Reveal

True to its word, Rockstar streamed An Extended Look exclusively on Netflix starting at 3 PM ET, giving subscribers a six-hour head start before the same footage landed on Rockstar’s YouTube channel and the official GTA 6 site at 9 PM ET. Rockstar confirmed the entire presentation was captured in-game on PlayStation 5, not pre-rendered, which makes the level of detail on display even more impressive. The studio also briefly addressed the recent gameplay leaks beforehand, thanking fans for their patience after what it called a heartbreaking week for the team.

Inside the Boobie Ike Job: Jason, Lucia and Their First Mission

The Extended Look opens mid-job, with Jason and Lucia arriving at a rundown building to make a pickup for local club owner Boobie Ike, hunting for a man named Raymond. The pair interact naturally with NPCs along the way, including a small, very Rockstar touch: Jason stops to pet a dog in the hallway before the two head up in the elevator toward the job.

Once things go sideways inside, the footage gives us our first proper look at GTA 6’s combat, which plays noticeably closer to Red Dead Redemption 2 than GTA 5, with a bit of Max Payne 3’s flair mixed in. Weapons can be picked up directly off the ground, and Rockstar showed off context-sensitive interactions that echo RDR2’s menu systems throughout the demo.

Cars, Slim Jims and a Busier Vice City

Vehicle theft gets a quieter option this time around: instead of always smashing a window, Jason can use a slim jim to break into a car without drawing attention. Later in the demo, Lucia brings Jason a change of clothes at their hideout, he grabs a beer from the fridge and flips on the TV, complete with a fake ad for an anti-anxiety medicine and an oddball burger commercial, before the pair head out in a convertible to meet Jason’s friend Brian at a club. Rockstar used the drive to show off just how much livelier Leonida’s streets are compared to San Andreas, with noticeably denser traffic and pedestrian activity.

A Map Packed With Side Activities

Outside of missions, the presentation teased a long list of things to do around Leonida: scuba diving, jet skiing, basketball, dirt biking, weightlifting, street racing, airboating, kayaking, boxing, base jumping, clubbing and dancing all made brief appearances. Rockstar hasn’t put a number on the total activity count yet, but the sheer variety on display suggests GTA 6’s open world will have plenty to do away from the main story.

On-the-Fly Character Customization

One detail that’s easy to miss: a quick shot showed a radial wheel, similar to the weapon-select wheel, that lets players swap accessories like hats, sunglasses or face coverings on the fly for both Jason and Lucia, without pausing to dig through a menu.

Consequences That Go Beyond Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar reiterated that player choices in GTA 6 will carry real weight, building on the honor and reputation systems from Red Dead Redemption 2 but pushing the idea further. Exact mechanics weren’t detailed in the Extended Look itself, but between the mission structure shown and Rockstar’s own comments, it’s clear consequence-driven storytelling is a bigger pillar for GTA 6 than for any prior entry in the series.

Where GTA 6 Stands Now

Grand Theft Auto VI is still locked in for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. With An Extended Look now out in the wild, Rockstar has roughly 12 weeks left to keep the marketing momentum going, and after a reveal this substantial, expect a steady stream of screenshots, character spotlights and possibly a fourth trailer before launch day.

Quick FAQ

Is the GTA 6 Extended Look available on YouTube now?
Yes. It went up on Rockstar’s official YouTube channel and the GTA VI website at 9 PM ET on August 27, six hours after its Netflix premiere.

Was the footage really gameplay, or was it cinematic?
Rockstar confirmed it was a mix of gameplay and cutscenes, captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5 rather than pre-rendered footage.

Does this confirm anything about GTA Online for GTA 6?
No. The Extended Look focused entirely on the single-player story featuring Jason and Lucia; Rockstar hasn’t shared any GTA 6 Online details yet.

Final Word

After more than a year between trailers and a marketing cycle dogged by leaks, Rockstar answered with easily its biggest, most substantial look at GTA 6 yet. Between the Boobie Ike mission, the upgraded combat and theft mechanics, and just how alive Leonida feels in motion, this Extended Look did exactly what it needed to: it made the November 19 release date feel real. Rewatch it, dissect every frame, we certainly will be doing the same over the next 12 weeks.
