GTA 6 Netflix Reveal Sends PS5 and Xbox Sales Soaring in the UK
Grand Theft Auto VI doesn’t come out until November, but it’s already moving hardware. In the week following Rockstar’s Extended Look premiere on Netflix, UK sales of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles jumped by roughly a third, according to Nielsen IQ data reported by The Games Business. It’s a rare bright spot for a console market that’s spent most of 2026 shrinking.
A Netflix Premiere That Actually Moved Hardware
Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiered exclusively on Netflix on August 27 before hitting Rockstar’s YouTube channel and the official GTA 6 site later that day. The nearly 26-minute presentation, captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, became Netflix’s most-watched title of the week, pulling in 31.1 million views in just four days. On YouTube alone, it racked up another 22 million views within a week.

That surge in attention translated directly into retail demand. Nielsen IQ figures show UK PS5 sales climbed 33% in the week of the reveal, while Xbox Series S and X sales rose 34% over the same period. PS5 Pro units have reportedly sold out at multiple UK retailers, with chains like Argos and Smyths Toys left stocking only base models. Some third-party sellers have even been listing PS5 Pro hardware for well above retail price.
A Welcome Break From a Rough Year for Hardware
The timing couldn’t be better for console makers. UK hardware sales were down 14.4% year-on-year through the end of July, driven largely by a 32% drop in PS5 sales, while Xbox Series X|S had managed a modest 3.1% increase. Rising component costs have pushed console prices up sharply over the past year, with the average US price for a new PS5 reportedly climbing 33% to around $672 and Xbox Series pricing up 22% to roughly $524.
Nintendo hasn’t missed out on the moment either. Switch 2 sales also rose by about a third in the same window, even though GTA 6 isn’t heading to the platform, suggesting the reveal gave the entire console market a lift rather than just Sony and Microsoft.
Will the Boost Actually Last?
Analysts are cautiously optimistic rather than fully convinced this is the start of a sustained rebound. Newzoo’s Ronan Patrick noted that today’s consoles are far more expensive in real terms than they were at launch, and expects GTA 6 and October’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 to nudge the installed base upward without triggering a massive wave of new hardware buyers. He also pointed out that most player time and spending tends to go toward older, already-owned titles rather than new purchases, drawing a comparison to the 2020-2021 GPU shortage, when engagement held steady even as hardware stayed scarce.
