Enshrouded 1.0: Do You Need a New World? Old Saves, Characters and What Changes Explained
Enshrouded leaves Early Access on October 15, and returning Flameborn are asking one question before anything else: Enshrouded 1.0 new world or old save? Keen Games has now answered it officially. Your Early Access worlds will still load, but the studio strongly recommends starting over. This guide explains what happens to your Enshrouded 1.0 old save and your characters, what gets reset, what changes for the Enshrouded 1.0 PS5 launch, and how to decide whether a fresh start is worth it for you.
Enshrouded 1.0 New World or Old Save: The Quick Answer
You don’t have to start a new world. In its official Launch FAQ from October 13, Keen Games confirms that Early Access saves can be used in 1.0. The save format is changing, so your old saves will be converted to a new, more efficient format. At the same time, Keen says it has made many improvements to the world and to the first few hours of the game, and strongly encourages players to start over if they’re up for it.
- Keep your old world if you have a huge base, a long-running group server or simply don’t want to replay the early game.
- Start a new world if you want to experience the reworked opening hours and the improved world the way Keen intended.
- Do both: keep your Early Access world as a building showcase and start a fresh 1.0 adventure on a second world slot.

Keen Games has improved the world and the opening hours for 1.0, which is why the studio recommends a fresh start.
What Happens to Your Enshrouded 1.0 Old Save
Keen has not announced any wipe. When you load an Early Access world in 1.0, the game converts it to the new save format, and you continue where you left off. This fits the studio’s track record: the big Early Access updates, including Update 8 “Forging the Path” in April 2026, also loaded existing worlds and converted older items and equipment instead of deleting progress.
What a converted world can’t give you is the full first impression. Keen specifically points to improvements in the world and the first few hours of the game, and areas you already cleared or rebuilt around your base will feel very different from a brand new playthrough. If you want to see what changed in the early regions, a new world is the only way to experience them the way they were designed.
Your Character Is Separate From Your World
This is the most important detail for the new world question. In Enshrouded, characters and worlds are saved separately. Your character holds your level, skills and inventory, while the world holds your bases, chests, terrain changes and world progress. Keen’s own dedicated server FAQ notes that character progression is stored on the player’s side, not on the server.
That means starting a new world doesn’t force you to start a new character. You can pick your existing Flameborn on the character screen and then create a fresh world, or create a new character for a completely clean run. Just keep in mind that bringing a high level character into a new world makes the reworked early game far less challenging.
The Skill Tree Reset: Spend Your Points First
There is one reset you can’t avoid, no matter which world you choose. In its 1.0 combat post from September 23, Keen confirmed that your skill tree will be reset because new skills were added and existing ones were moved. The studio’s advice is clear: don’t step out of your base before investing your points again.
Here is what else changes for existing characters, according to Keen’s official posts:
- Higher level caps: the new biome brings a new enemy tier, the player level cap rises to 50 and equipment goes up to level 55.
- Mage rework: nine new spells arrive, including summons such as totems and a Hollow Skeleton, and Eternal spells can now be upgraded.
- New skills for mages and archers: for example Blast and Cast, Puncture, Barrage and Survival Instinct, plus three new upgradeable Eternal arrows.
- Sparkworks: a new logic system that connects inputs like levers and pressure plates with outputs like doors and traps.

Mages get major new options in 1.0, so plan your new build before you leave your base.
Enshrouded 1.0 PS5: What Console Players Need to Know
Enshrouded 1.0 is also the game’s console debut. It launches on PlayStation 5 on the same day as the PC version, October 15, 2026, and the PlayStation Store listing confirms PS5 Pro enhancements. The Xbox Series X|S version follows later, with Keen targeting spring 2027.
- No crossplay at launch: Keen confirms that Enshrouded will not be cross-platform at launch. The studio is working on it, but has no estimate yet. PC and PS5 players can’t share a world for now.
- Up to 8 online players on PS5: the PlayStation Store lists online play for up to 8 players, and PS Plus is required for online play. On PC, worlds support up to 16 players.
- Every PS5 player starts fresh: Enshrouded was PC exclusive during Early Access, and Keen has not announced any way to move PC saves or characters to PS5. For console players, the new world question answers itself.
If your group is split between PC and PS5, settle on one platform before launch night, since you won’t be able to play together until crossplay arrives.
Do PC Early Access Players Need to Buy Enshrouded Again?
No. Keen confirms that you don’t need to buy Enshrouded on PC again if you already own the Early Access version. As a thank you, Early Access owners also get three exclusive decorative props for their base: a statue over four meters tall, a tome with the “E” that served as the Early Access logo, and a signal light. You can claim them through the “Redeem Add-Ons” button in the escape menu. Players who buy the game later can’t place these props themselves, but an Early Access owner can visit their world and place them.
Back Up Your Saves Before Launching 1.0
Since 1.0 converts your saves to a new format, a manual backup is the safest move before you start the update for the first time. Close the game completely, then copy your entire save folder to a safe location:
- Steam Cloud enabled (default): Steam\userdata\[your Steam ID]\1203620\remote
- Steam Cloud disabled: %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Enshrouded
- Dedicated servers: the savegame folder of your server installation
On your PC, your character files sit in the same folder as your local worlds, and each world uses files named after an eight-character ID. Copy everything, not just a single world, so that worlds and characters stay in sync if you ever need to roll back.

Whether you return to an old world or start fresh, a backup keeps your Early Access progress safe.
Should You Start a New World in Enshrouded 1.0? Our Verdict
If you poured hundreds of hours into a castle or run a server for a big community, keep your old world. It will load in 1.0, and your bases are worth more than a clean slate. For everyone else, we recommend following Keen’s advice and starting an Enshrouded 1.0 new world. You’ll see the reworked early game and the improved world in the intended order, and since characters and worlds are separate, you can still take your existing Flameborn along if you prefer. Just remember to reinvest your skill points first.
Keen planned to publish the full 1.0 changelog one day before release, with a highlights video following on launch day, so expect more details soon. Facing the same decision in another survival game?
