Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance Adds Master Rank to Fix an Endgame That Got Too Easy
Capcom has shared new details on Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, the expansion coming to the game in 2027, focusing this time on why the base game’s endgame is getting a difficulty overhaul. Director Takuro Hiraoka and series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto explained that Ascendance is meant to separate an approachable main story from a genuinely tough late game, addressing feedback that Wilds ended up easier than the team originally intended.
A Deliberate Difficulty Reset
Monster Hunter Wilds was built to be more welcoming to newcomers than past entries, and Capcom has acknowledged that the approach left veteran hunters with less of a wall to climb than expected. Hiraoka summed up the gap plainly: “Maybe players got better than we expected in the intervening years.” Ascendance’s answer is Master Rank, a new difficulty tier aimed squarely at players who cleared Wilds’ story without much resistance and want the series’ traditional endgame grind back.

What It Takes to Reach Master Rank
Master Rank content unlocks once a hunter reaches Hunter Rank 40 and completes a specific seven-star assignment, gating the new challenge behind real story progress rather than opening it up from the start. Ascendance also introduces the Boost Bracer, a new tool tied to its own gauge rather than a flat power boost. Managed correctly, it grants weapon-specific bursts, from stronger combo strings to short windows of extra damage, giving hunters another layer of timing and resource management to master alongside the tougher monsters.
New Turf, Returning Threats
The expansion’s headline new location is the Skybound Eyrie, a vertical ruin built around gliding traversal rather than the ground level exploration Wilds has leaned on so far. Capcom has confirmed Teostra and Khezu as returning monsters for the expansion, alongside new additions built for the tougher Master Rank tier. Ascendance is set to launch in 2027 for PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, following up on the expansion’s original reveal at Capcom’s Tokyo Game Show 2026 Spotlight. Tsujimoto said the team has continued gathering player feedback since launch to shape what comes next, and with Master Rank now confirmed, Wilds finally looks set to get the harder endgame its base version was missing.
