Monster Hunter Wilds Story Explained: Wyveria, the Guardians, Zoh Shia and What Comes Next in Ascendance

Monster Hunter Wilds is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on December 4, 2026, and its massive expansion Ascendance is on the way in 2027, so plenty of new and returning hunters are asking the same thing: what actually happened in the Forbidden Lands? This is Monster Hunter Wilds story explained in full, from a lost boy named Nata and the monster called the White Wraith to the fallen civilization of Wyveria, its artificial Guardians, the Zoh Shia ending, the High Rank story and what Ascendance sets up next.

Wilds tells the most story-driven tale in the series so far, but plenty of its lore is delivered through side conversations and mission briefings. We stick to what the game and Capcom’s official material show, and anything that goes beyond that is clearly marked as a fan theory.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning ⚠️ This article spoils the full Low Rank and High Rank story of Monster Hunter Wilds, including the free Title Updates released so far.

πŸ‘¦ How the Story Begins: Nata and the White Wraith

Monster Hunter Wilds opens with a mystery. Guild explorers find a boy named Nata in the wasteland on the edge of the Forbidden Lands. He claims to come from inside that supposedly empty region and says his people, the Keepers, were attacked by a monster they call the White Wraith, a creature thought to have died out long ago.

The Guild answers with a full research expedition, founded and led by Fabius, a veteran hunter turned Academy professor. Long-time fans will recognise him: he is the Ace Lancer from Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. The expedition is split into small units, each with a hunter, a handler, a smithy and a Palico. The player’s Hunter leads the Avis Unit together with handler Alma, an anthropologist with a passion for archaeology, and smithy Gemma, and the unit is also tasked with taking Nata home. The more experienced Astrum Unit consists of hunter Olivia, her Palico Athos, biologist Erik and engineer Werner.

πŸŒͺ️ What Are the Forbidden Lands? Inclemencies and Apex Predators

A glowing storm gathers over the Windward Plains during an Inclemency in Monster Hunter Wilds

The Forbidden Lands swing between hunger, violent storms and abundance, and nobody knows why at first.

The Forbidden Lands are anything but empty. Each region cycles through three states: Fallow, a lean period when hungry predators roam, a destructive Inclemency, and a rich season of Plenty. The Windward Plains suffer the Sandtide, a thunder-filled sandstorm, the Scarlet Forest floods during the Downpour, and the Oilwell Basin erupts with the fires of the Firespring. Every region also has an apex predator tied to its Inclemency:

  • Rey Dau rules the Windward Plains
  • Uth Duna rules the Scarlet Forest
  • Nu Udra rules the Oilwell Basin
  • Jin Dahaad rules the frozen Iceshard Cliffs

People live here too. The village of Kunafa on the Windward Plains raises livestock and trains Seikret, the bird-like mounts that become the expedition’s ride. The Wudwuds, small furry Lynians, live hidden in the Scarlet Forest. Azuz, a crafting town built around a great forge called the Everforge, lies in the Oilwell Basin. Deeper in the story, the team reaches Suja, a mountain village of Wyverians, and finally Sild, the home of the Keepers inside the Ruins of Wyveria.

🦴 The Landspine and the Mystery of Wyvern Milk

While searching for the Keepers, the expedition notices that the regions are connected by a huge structure called the Landspine. It is damaged and leaks a white crystalline substance known as Wyvern Milk, or “Wylk”, and the weather of every region seems to depend on it. Along the way, the Hunter sees the White Wraith at the Wind’s Gasp, where it drains energy from a Rey Dau before flying off.

The Landspine’s true nature becomes clear in Azuz. Werner tries to repair it to bring back the town’s Firespring, but the blocked energy surges out all at once. The Everforge goes into a frenzy, Ajarakan attack the town and Nu Udra rises from the depths of the basin. The incident proves that the Landspine is an artificial structure and that the strange natural cycle of the Forbidden Lands is, at least in part, man-made.

πŸ›οΈ What Is Wyveria? The Fallen Civilization Explained

Following the Landspine, the expedition finally reaches the Ruins of Wyveria, the former capital of an ancient civilization, where Nata is reunited with the Keepers. Through the Keepers and later the Allhearken, the story of Wyveria comes together:

  • The Dragontorch: Wyveria built a powerful, seemingly endless source of energy deep beneath its capital. It produces Wyvern Milk, which was spread across the land through the Landspine and powered Wyveria’s technology, including systems that influenced the weather.
  • The Guardians: Wyveria created artificial monsters, called Constructs in game terms, to serve and defend it. Guardian Rathalos, Guardian Doshaguma, Guardian Ebony Odogaron, Guardian Fulgur Anjanath and Guardian Seikret are all copies of real species, recognisable by their pale bodies, black eyes and glowing veins. They do not need to eat and live on Wyvern Milk alone.
  • The fall: when Wyveria faced a threat the game never identifies, it created its ultimate Guardian, Zoh Shia, as a secret weapon. Zoh Shia turned on its makers, and the civilization collapsed.

Even after Wyveria fell, the Dragontorch kept pumping out Wyvern Milk and the old machinery kept running, which is why the Forbidden Lands still swing between such extreme seasons today. The peoples living there now are descended from those who survived the collapse.

πŸ›‘οΈ Who Are the Keepers and the Allhearken?

The Keepers are Nata’s people. Their village, Sild, lies inside the Ruins of Wyveria, and they have spent generations isolated from the rest of the Forbidden Lands, watching over the ruins, the Guardians and what remains of Wyveria’s secrets. Nata, who lost his father, is looked after by Tasheen, whom he calls his uncle, and it was Tasheen who sent him away when the White Wraith attacked.

The Allhearken is the elderly Wyverian who leads Suja. “Allhearken” is not her name but a title passed down to Wyverians with a rare gift: she can somehow hear what happens across the land, past and present. Suja itself has its own history with Wyveria, as the Wyverians who founded the village were driven out of the capital long before its fall.

⛓️ Is Arkveld a Guardian? The Truth About the White Wraith

A hunter stands before a massive monster in a dark cavern in Monster Hunter Wilds

The deeper the expedition goes, the clearer it becomes that many monsters here were never meant to exist naturally.

The answer is yes, at least at first. The White Wraith that destroyed Nata’s peace is Guardian Arkveld, a Guardian modelled on Arkveld, a species of chain-winged flying wyvern believed to be extinct. Arkveld lashes out with chain-like appendages on its wings and drains the life energy of other monsters, which is exactly what the Hunter saw at the Wind’s Gasp.

What shocks the Keepers is that a Guardian, a creature with no need to feed, started hunting at all. The Allhearken sends Nata to see for himself what Arkveld is trying to become. The truth is tragic: this Guardian has slipped the control it was built under and is turning back into a living animal, but its hunger for energy has grown out of control and threatens the entire ecosystem. Nata, who once wanted it dead, now pities it, yet the Hunter has to slay Guardian Arkveld in the lower depths of Wyvern’s Rest.

πŸ‰ What Is Zoh Shia? The Ending of Monster Hunter Wilds Explained

The trail finally leads to the Dragontorch itself, and the expedition discovers why the Forbidden Lands have been so unstable: Zoh Shia, Wyveria’s secret weapon and ultimate Guardian, has wrapped itself around the Dragontorch and is feeding on its energy. Its pale, angelic shell is made of crystallised Wyvern Milk, and it is growing stronger.

The group faces a terrible choice. The Keepers’ ancient duty includes the means to stop the Dragontorch, a duty Nata inherited from his late father. Stopping the torch would end Zoh Shia, but it would also collapse the entire ecosystem it feeds. Olivia argues for shutting it down to save lives, while Werner considers the Dragontorch far too valuable to lose, and the decision is left to Nata.

At the Dragontorch, Nata hesitates, and the Hunter takes a third option: instead of destroying the energy source, they slay Zoh Shia themselves. In the fight, Zoh Shia sheds its white shell and turns into a much darker, more monstrous form, but the Hunter wins. With the monster gone, the Dragontorch’s energy pushes the whole region into a season of Plenty. Nata becomes an apprentice hunter and a link between the Guild and the peoples of the Forbidden Lands, and the discovery of an Arkveld egg shows that the species itself has been reborn. This is the ending of the Low Rank story.

🦠 The High Rank Story: Gore Magala, the Frenzy and Arkveld’s Return

After Zoh Shia, the Guild sets up a long-term presence in the Eastlands, with a Grand Hub next to Suja. New problems start quickly. A Frenzied Nerscylla appears in the Wounded Hollow near Suja, tempered monsters turn up in the Ruins of Wyveria, and the Dragontorch begins to release far too much energy, causing extreme weather across all regions.

The cause is Gore Magala, the dark Demi-Elder Dragon that spreads the Frenzy Virus and first appeared in Monster Hunter 4. It has reached the Forbidden Lands and infected not only other monsters but the Dragontorch itself, revealing that Wyveria’s energy source is in fact a living organism. The Hunter has to put down the raging apex predators, and Fabius returns to the field in his old Ace Lancer gear to hunt Gore Magala alongside them. With the infection treated, the Dragontorch calms down.

The cost is Arkveld. The new, natural Arkveld has also been infected, and after watching it slaughter other monsters, Nata asks the Hunter to slay it himself, this time understanding why it has to be done. The Hunter suggests that this Arkveld may have laid an egg before dying, and promises Nata to look for it together.

πŸ” Zoh Shia’s Return and the Title Updates

Zoh Shia does not stay dead. In Title Update 1 (April 2025), Werner calls the Avis Unit to Suja because the Dragontorch, sealed off after the final battle, is suddenly surrounded by cocoons. Zoh Shia has been reborn, and the Hunter slays it again. The Guild theorises that it can rebuild itself as long as it has a powerful energy source like the Dragontorch. Shutting the torch down would create new problems, so the Guild keeps studying it and assigns the Hunter to watch Zoh Shia’s nest and slay it whenever it returns.

Later free updates added more chapters to the story. A Final Fantasy XIV collaboration in September 2025 brought the superboss Omega Planetes to the Forbidden Lands. Title Update 4 in December 2025 introduced Gogmazios, the tar-covered elder dragon from Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, found hibernating in an ancient underground expanse beneath Azuz with a formidable ancient weapon lodged in its back. To stop it, Werner proposes reactivating that weapon, and Fabius calls in his old friend Nadia, the Ace Gunner.

πŸ”— Monster Hunter Wilds Connections to Older Games

Wilds is the successor to Monster Hunter: World, but its strongest ties go back to Monster Hunter 4 and 4 Ultimate. Fabius is the former Ace Lancer, Nadia is the Ace Gunner, Gore Magala and its Frenzy Virus return, and Gogmazios comes straight from 4 Ultimate. Gemma is also strongly hinted to be the grown-up version of the young smith from the caravan in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, known as Little Miss Forge, though the game never spells it out.

🏰 Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance Story: What Comes Next

A hunter faces the giant silhouette of Lao-Shan Lung in the fog in Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance

Lao-Shan Lung’s arrival changes the Forbidden Lands for years to come.

Capcom’s official synopsis for Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance picks up with a disaster. The colossal elder dragon Lao-Shan Lung suddenly appears in the Forbidden Lands, and the hunters are overwhelmed by its strength. In the years after the attack, the Guild and the people of the Eastlands build the Madoi Stronghold to prepare for the dragon’s return. When the mists above Wyveria clear, a network of floating ruins is revealed: the Skybound Eyrie.

The expansion is set several years after the events of Wilds and requires players to have completed the 7β˜… assignment “Awaking From a Dream”. Confirmed monsters include the new flagship elder dragon Gundoraja, called the Black Sky’s Wrath, plus Teostra, Kushala Daora, Khezu and the new bird wyvern Araketa. Ascendance also adds Master Rank and the Boost Bracer, and Nata, Alma, Gemma, Olivia, Fabius and Nadia are all part of the official character line-up. It launches in 2027 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam. 🧩 Monster Hunter Wilds Theories (Speculation)

Everything in this section goes beyond what the game confirms.

  • Wyveria feared Fatalis: Zoh Shia’s dark final form has an eye and attacks that many players compare to Fatalis, the legendary Black Dragon. That has led to the popular theory that Fatalis was the threat Wyveria built its weapon against. The game never names the threat.
  • Wyveria is the series’ Ancient Civilization: some fans believe Wyveria is the same advanced ancient civilization hinted at in older Monster Hunter games. Capcom has not confirmed this.
  • The Skybound Eyrie is part of Wyveria: the ruins appear above Wyveria once the mists clear, so many expect Ascendance to reveal more about the fallen civilization. How exactly they are connected is still unknown.

  • The transition from Wyveria’s ruin to Arkveld’s rise feels incredibly abrupt. I wonder how the political instability affected the immediate military response.
