Kojima Productions Pushes Back on Bloomberg’s Report About Why PlayStation Cancelled Physint

Kojima Productions is pushing back hard on a report that tried to explain why PlayStation walked away from Physint. In a statement posted to its official X account on September 20, the studio said a Bloomberg article covering the split relied on unverified claims and urged fans to treat it “with a dose of scepticism.”

What Bloomberg’s Report Claimed

Bloomberg’s September 11 report offered the first detailed explanation for Sony’s abrupt exit from Physint, pointing to a mix of factors rather than a single cause. It cited the project running well over budget despite still being years from release, missed internal deadlines, and disappointing revenue from Kojima’s Death Stranding games, both of which later became timed PlayStation exclusives rather than staying platform-locked. The report also pointed to Sony’s reluctance to keep funding a project that wouldn’t remain exclusive, and noted that Sony executives with personal ties to Kojima had since left the company.

Kojima Productions Says the Story Is Off Base

Kojima Productions didn’t deny that Physint left PlayStation, but it disputed the reasoning behind it, writing that “none of the claims written came from any official or on-the-record source.” The studio added that “the studio is in a healthy, profitable state,” that “development for Physint continues to move forward with Xbox,” and that “our relationship with PlayStation remains strong.” Sony hasn’t responded to the studio’s rebuttal, and Bloomberg has not issued any follow-up defending its reporting.

A Rocky 2026 for Physint

Kojima has said PlayStation Studios notified the team in mid-June 2026 that it was cancelling Physint, with no public reason given at the time. Sony and Xbox both confirmed the platform switch on September 10, just one day before Bloomberg’s report surfaced, and Physint officially moved to Xbox as part of an expanded publishing partnership that also covers OD. Just a week later, Kojima Productions used Tokyo Game Show week to confirm Bill Skarsgård as the game’s lead actor, alongside a new “The Next Cold War Begins” tagline. Through all of it, Physint still doesn’t have a release window, platform lineup beyond Xbox, or confirmed engine.

Kojima Productions announced Xbox as Physint’s new partner on September 10, a day before Bloomberg’s disputed report.

For now, the disagreement between Kojima Productions and Bloomberg’s sourcing remains unresolved, with no independent confirmation of either version of events beyond the two statements themselves.
