Planet Zoo 2 Animals List: Every Animal at Launch, Sorted by Biome and Continent

Planet Zoo 2 launched with 136 animal species. 130 of them are in the base game, and 6 more come with the Deluxe Edition or the separate Deluxe Upgrade Pack. Frontier’s own launch announcement says the game “features over 130 awesome animals”, and the official Zoopedia lists exactly 136 at launch, including flying birds and fully aquatic species for the first time in the series. Below you’ll find every Planet Zoo 2 animal sorted by habitat type, continent, ocean and biome, with the Deluxe animals clearly marked.

How Many Animals Are in Planet Zoo 2?

Planet Zoo 2 came out on October 13, 2026 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Here’s how the 136 species at launch break down:

  • Total: 136 species
  • Base game: 130 species
  • Deluxe Edition / Deluxe Upgrade Pack: 6 species
  • Pre-order bonus: 0 species (cosmetic items only, see below)
  • By group: 51 mammals, 29 bony fish, 14 birds, 14 reptiles, 9 insects, 8 amphibians, 6 sharks and rays, 2 arachnids, plus one centipede, one snail and one jellyfish

That’s a much bigger launch roster than the first Planet Zoo, which saw most of its 200+ species arrive later through DLC and updates. Frontier has already said it is working on post-launch support, so expect this number to grow, and we’ll keep this Planet Zoo 2 animals list updated.

Base Game, Deluxe Edition and Pre-Order Bonus Animals

Every animal in this list is part of the base game unless it’s marked (Deluxe). The Deluxe Edition, also sold separately as the Planet Zoo 2: Deluxe Upgrade Pack, adds these 6 species plus a set of exclusive animal signs:

  • Golden Eagle (aviary bird)
  • Golden Lion Tamarin (land habitat)
  • Great Hammerhead (aquarium)
  • Axolotl (exhibit)
  • Blue and Gold Fusilier (aquarium or exhibit shoal)
  • Longfin Batfish (aquarium)

The pre-order bonus doesn’t include any animals. The Bonus Content Pack contains the Toucan Eat Shop and Signage, 3 unique animal donation bins and a Tiger Photo Stand-In Wall. If you missed the pre-order, Frontier also sells it as a small DLC, so no animal is locked behind a pre-order. There are no paid animal packs beyond the Deluxe content at launch.

Planet Zoo 2 Animals by Habitat Type

Planet Zoo 2 houses animals in four different ways, and the type decides what you have to build. Why Biome and Continent Matter in Planet Zoo 2

Biome and continent aren’t just trivia. Frontier’s official animal guide explains that getting animals to Thriving status means using plants native to their biome and continent or ocean. That makes these groupings useful for planning: animals that share both a biome and a continent, like the Grassland animals of Africa or the Tropical animals of Asia, can be grouped in themed areas where they all use the same plant set.

Before mixing species, always check each animal’s page in the Zoopedia. Each species has its own social group size, temperature range and space needs, and a shared habitat has to meet the requirements of every species living in it.

Our Verdict: The Planet Zoo 2 Animals List at Launch

With 136 species at launch, 130 of them in the base game, Planet Zoo 2 has the strongest launch roster in the series, and it covers far more than big mammals. Almost half of the roster lives in aquariums or exhibits, and 12 flying birds finally make aviaries possible. The Deluxe Edition’s 6 animals are a nice bonus, with the Great Hammerhead and Golden Eagle as standouts, but they aren’t essential, since the base game already covers every habitat type and biome. Our recommendation: start with the base game, use the biome and continent lists above to plan themed areas, and only pick up the Deluxe Upgrade Pack if one of those 6 species is a must-have for your zoo.
