Modern Warfare Story Recap: Everything That Happened Before Modern Warfare 4, From Task Force 141 to Soap’s Death
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026, with Campaign Early Access starting October 16, and Infinity Ward is picking up the story right where Modern Warfare III left it: with Task Force 141 broken, Soap dead and Captain Price on the run. If you skipped a game or simply forgot who betrayed whom, this Modern Warfare story recap walks you through everything that happened in the rebooted trilogy, from a stolen gas shipment in Verdansk in 2019 to the gunshot in General Shepherd’s office that ends Modern Warfare III.
We stick to what the games and Activision’s official material establish. Where something is only teased or interpreted, we say so clearly. For Modern Warfare 4 itself we only cover the premise that Activision has officially revealed, so you can go in without campaign spoilers.
โ ๏ธ Spoiler Warning โ ๏ธ This article spoils the full campaigns of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), Modern Warfare II (2022) and Modern Warfare III (2023), including their endings.

๐ Reboot vs Original: Which Modern Warfare Story Are We Talking About?
The name causes a lot of confusion. The original Modern Warfare trilogy ran from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) to Modern Warfare 3 (2011), with Billy Murray as Captain Price. In 2019, Infinity Ward started over. The reboot reuses familiar names like Price, Soap, Ghost, Gaz, Nikolai, Shepherd and Makarov, but it tells a new story in a new continuity, with Barry Sloane voicing Price and also performing his motion capture.
So when Modern Warfare 4 talks about Price, Makarov and the fallout of Shepherd’s betrayal, it is building on the 2019, 2022 and 2023 games, not on the classics. You do not need to have played the original trilogy, although fans will notice plenty of deliberate echoes, which we cover further down.
โฃ๏ธ Modern Warfare (2019): The Stolen Gas and the War in Urzikstan
The rebooted story begins in October 2019 in Verdansk, a city in the fictional country of Kastovia. CIA operative Alex Keller and a team of Marines raid a depot belonging to rogue Russian General Roman Barkov to recover a shipment of chemical weapons bound for Urzikstan. An unknown group ambushes them, the Marines are killed and the gas is stolen.
The next day, suicide bombers from the terror group Al-Qatala attack Piccadilly Circus in London. SAS Captain John Price and Sergeant Kyle “Gaz” Garrick respond, and a night raid on an Al-Qatala safehouse gives them a lead on the group’s leader, Omar Sulaman, known as “The Wolf”. His right hand is Jamal Rahar, “The Butcher”.
CIA Station Chief Kate Laswell sends Alex to the fictional Middle Eastern country of Urzikstan, which suffers both under Al-Qatala and under Barkov’s Russian occupation. There he meets Farah Karim, commander of the Urzikstan Liberation Force (ULF). They make a deal: Alex helps Farah fight the Russians, and the ULF helps him find the stolen gas.
๐บ The Wolf, Hadir’s Secret and the Fall of Barkov
Alex and the U.S. Marines capture The Wolf, but Al-Qatala storms the U.S. Embassy in Urzikstan and frees him. Then comes the big twist. The gas was never taken by Al-Qatala. It was stolen by Hadir Karim, Farah’s own brother, who unleashes it on the so-called Highway of Death against Barkov’s soldiers and Al-Qatala fighters alike.
A flashback explains why the Karim siblings hate Barkov so much. In 1999, as children, Farah and Hadir lived through Barkov’s invasion of Urzikstan, which left them orphans. They spent about ten years in captivity before breaking out, with Price’s help. That is where the bond between Price and Farah comes from.
The Wolf is finally killed, and Price and Gaz travel to Saint Petersburg, where Price’s old contact Nikolai helps them capture The Butcher. Price breaks him by bringing his family into the room, one of the campaign’s most uncomfortable scenes, and the player, as Gaz, decides The Butcher’s fate. Hadir is later handed over to Russia, while Price makes sure his team keeps the intelligence on Barkov’s chemical weapons factory in Georgia.
In the finale, Price, Gaz, Farah and Alex raid that factory. When the detonator fails, Alex sets off the explosives by hand and appears to die in the blast. As Barkov tries to flee by helicopter, Farah kills him. In the closing scene, Price and Laswell agree to form a new unit and Price names his recruits: Gaz, John “Soap” MacTavish and Simon “Ghost” Riley. Task Force 141 is born.
๐ Modern Warfare II (2022): Hassan, the Cartel and Shepherd’s Betrayal
Modern Warfare II is set in 2022. In July, Task Force 141, under U.S. Army General Herschel Shepherd, carries out a missile strike in Al Mazrah, the capital of the fictional United Republic of Adal, killing Iranian General Ghorbrani. His lieutenant, Quds Force Major Hassan Zyani, swears revenge on the United States, and 141 soon learns that he has his hands on American ballistic missiles.
The trail leads through Amsterdam to Mexico, where Hassan pays the Las Almas Cartel to smuggle the missiles across the border. Task Force 141 teams up with Los Vaqueros, a Mexican Special Forces unit led by Colonel Alejandro Vargas and Sergeant Major Rodolfo Parra, and with Shadow Company, a private military company commanded by Phillip Graves and working directly for Shepherd. They capture Hassan, only to be ordered to release him to avoid a political crisis with Iran.
The mysterious cartel boss “El Sin Nombre” turns out to be Valeria Garza, Alejandro’s former special forces comrade. Her information leads the team to a missile on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. They stop the launch, and then Graves and Shadow Company turn their guns on Task Force 141 and Los Vaqueros, on Shepherd’s orders. Alejandro is captured, while Ghost and Soap have to fight their way out through the streets of Las Almas.
๐ Why Did Shepherd Betray Task Force 141?
Laswell uncovers the reason. In August, Shepherd and Graves had run an illegal transfer of U.S. ballistic missiles meant for allies in the Middle East. The convoy was ambushed by the Russian ultranationalist Konni Group, which stole the missiles. Shepherd covered up the failure and used Shadow Company to silence anyone who got too close to the truth, including his own task force. Price promises to deal with Shepherd once the immediate threat is gone.
Task Force 141 and Los Vaqueros retake their base, and Graves apparently dies. The final showdown takes place in Chicago, where the team destroys Hassan’s missile before it can hit its target. As Hassan tries to throw Soap off a building, Ghost kills him with a sniper shot. Shepherd goes into hiding, and Laswell finally names the man behind the stolen missiles: Vladimir Makarov. A mid-credits scene shows Makarov texting a terrorist cell that is about to hijack a plane, telling them not to speak Russian, a clear nod to the infamous “No Russian” mission from the original Modern Warfare 2.
One more detail matters for later. Graves was not as dead as he looked. Post-launch content for Modern Warfare II revealed that he survived, setting up his return in Modern Warfare III.

๐ Modern Warfare III (2023): Who Is Makarov and How Did He Escape?
Vladimir Makarov is a Russian ultranationalist terrorist and the mind behind the Konni Group. Modern Warfare III opens in November 2023 with the mission “Operation 627”, in which Konni operatives break him out of the Zordaya Prison Complex in Verdansk, where he had been held since 2019.
Once free, Makarov goes after the chemical weapons that General Barkov left behind, and he specializes in false flag attacks designed to put the blame on others. In the mission “Passenger”, he uses a former ULF fighter wearing a bomb vest to destroy a Kastovian airliner, framing Farah’s movement for the massacre. Farah and Alex, who is alive after all, are forced to cover their tracks at the crash site.
To catch Makarov, Price makes some uncomfortable deals. Task Force 141 finds Shepherd as Makarov’s prisoner in a Konni convoy in Siberia. Price gives him a choice: share everything he knows about Makarov and testify before Congress, or be left behind in the frozen wilderness. Shepherd talks, revealing Makarov’s plan to destroy the Gora Dam and flood Verdansk. Graves and Shadow Company are back too, this time fighting alongside Price, Farah and Alex. Both threats are stopped, and later Shepherd and Graves testify before Congress, where the two men turn on each other.

๐ What Happened to Soap? Modern Warfare III’s Ending Explained
Makarov’s final target is the Channel Tunnel, which he plans to destroy with a dirty bomb. Task Force 141 heads to London, and Price and Soap find the bomb in the tunnels beneath the city. While they try to defuse it, Makarov ambushes them and goes for Price. Soap throws himself at Makarov to save his captain, and Makarov shoots Soap in the head, killing him, before escaping. Ghost and Gaz arrive in time to help Price defuse the bomb.
The campaign ends quietly, with Price, Ghost and Gaz scattering Soap’s ashes from a cliff in Scotland. But the story is not over. In a mid-credits scene, Price slips into Shepherd’s office at night and kills him. Activision’s own recap is clear about the motive: Price holds Shepherd responsible for enabling Makarov, whose operations grew after Shepherd ordered Shadow Company to turn on Task Force 141.
So Modern Warfare III ends with one villain dead, the other still free, and the leader of Task Force 141 now a man who has assassinated a U.S. general. Makarov, the man who actually pulled the trigger on Soap, is still out there.
๐ช Echoes of the Original Trilogy
Longtime fans will recognize the shape of this story. In the original Modern Warfare 2 (2009), Shepherd also betrayed Task Force 141, and the game ended with Soap killing him with a knife. In the original Modern Warfare 3 (2011), Soap died as well, and a vengeful Price hunted Makarov down and killed him by hanging him in a hotel.
The reboot remixes those beats rather than repeating them. Shepherd dies at Price’s hand instead of Soap’s, and Soap’s death closes the reboot trilogy instead of happening midway through it. Whether Modern Warfare 4 follows the original’s path for Makarov is something only the game can answer, and we are not going to guess.
๐ฐ๐ท Modern Warfare 4 Story: What We Officially Know
Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 continues directly from Modern Warfare III. Based on Activision’s official campaign trailer, shown at the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast on September 17, and its official story recap, this is the setup:
- Price is a fugitive, after Shepherd’s assassination, Task Force 141 has been disbanded and Price operates outside the system, driven by revenge against Makarov
- Ghost and Gaz are hunting him, his former squadmates have been ordered to capture or kill their old captain, and Ghost does not agree with Price’s methods
- Laswell is still in contact, the CIA Station Chief keeps talking to Price, even if she seems uneasy about how far he is willing to go
- An old enemy becomes an ally, Price forms an uneasy alliance with Valeria Garza, the cartel leader from Modern Warfare II, against a bigger threat
- North Korea invades South Korea, the campaign opens with a full-scale invasion starting in Hajin City, where Private Park Hyun Jun and his squad fight alongside U.S. and South Korean Marines
- A weapon and “The Archer”, a mysterious weapon of war is being delivered to a figure called The Archer, whose goals Activision has not revealed
- A global campaign, besides the Korean Peninsula, the story also visits locations such as New York, Paris and Mumbai
How the Korean war, The Archer’s weapon and Price’s hunt for Makarov fit together is exactly what the campaign is there to reveal. Any connection beyond what is listed above is speculation for now. ๐ฎ Do You Need to Play MW3 Before MW4?
Not strictly, but it helps a lot. Modern Warfare 4’s whole setup, Price on the run, 141 disbanded, Ghost and Gaz against their captain, only makes emotional sense if you know about Soap’s death and Shepherd’s betrayal. If you are short on time, the most important moments are the ending of Modern Warfare (2019), the Shadow Company betrayal in Modern Warfare II, and the final mission and mid-credits scene of Modern Warfare III. The Korean storyline with Park Hyun Jun’s squad is new, so that part of the campaign needs no homework at all.
โ Quick Questions About the Modern Warfare Story
What happened to Soap in Modern Warfare III?
Soap is killed by Makarov in the final mission. While Price and Soap try to defuse a dirty bomb in the tunnels under London, Makarov ambushes them, Soap saves Price, and Makarov shoots him in the head.
Why did Price kill Shepherd?
Price holds Shepherd responsible for Makarov’s rise. Shepherd’s illegal missile deal put American missiles in Makarov’s hands, and Shepherd then had Shadow Company turn on Task Force 141 to cover it up.
Who is Makarov in the Modern Warfare reboot?
Vladimir Makarov is a Russian ultranationalist terrorist who leads the Konni Group. He is behind the stolen missiles in Modern Warfare II and is the main villain of Modern Warfare III.
Is the Modern Warfare reboot connected to the original trilogy?
No. The 2019 reboot is a separate continuity that reuses familiar characters and ideas, but tells its own story.
Is Price the villain in Modern Warfare 4?
Activision presents him as a fugitive with questionable methods, not as a villain. He is hunted by his own former squadmates, but his target is still Makarov.
Final Words
The Modern Warfare reboot started with a stolen chemical weapon in Verdansk and turned into the story of a soldier slowly crossing every line he once defended. Price built Task Force 141, watched it get betrayed by its own commander, lost Soap to Makarov and finally executed Shepherd himself. Modern Warfare 4 now asks what happens to a hero who has nothing left but revenge, while a war breaks out on the Korean Peninsula. With this recap in mind, you are ready to find out on October 23.
