Fallout 76’s Pint-Sized Slasher: Who He Is, Where to Find Him, and How to Beat Him

Bethesda kicked off Fallout 76’s spookiest content drop of the year today, September 15, with the launch of “The Slasher” update (Patch 70) alongside Season 26, “Beware the Blood Moon.” At the center of it all is a name longtime Vault Dwellers have only ever seen on a Halloween costume, the Pint-Sized Slasher. Here’s who he actually is, where his followers are turning up across Appalachia, and what it takes to beat him.

Who Is the Pint-Sized Slasher?

In Fallout lore, the Pint-Sized Slasher is a pre-War serial killer remembered for a clown mask, a striped shirt, and a knife, a legend players previously only touched through a Pint-Sized Slasher costume and mask sold as cosmetics. With The Slasher update, that legend stops being just a costume. A deranged killer and a cult of copycat followers have taken up his name and mask, and a real string of murders is now breaking out across the region. Bethesda frames the season’s endgame as a face-off with the killer’s copycat, deliberately leaving open whether it is the original Pint-Sized Slasher back from the dead or fanatics playing dress-up.

Bethesda calls it “a frightening experience that unravels over the weeks spanning our Fall updates,” rather than a single self-contained event. That is an unusual structure for Fallout 76, where seasonal storylines usually land all at once, and it means the Pint-Sized Slasher hunt is meant to escalate gradually rather than get solved in one sitting.

Where to Find the Pint-Sized Slasher in Appalachia

The hunt begins today with a new quest, The Slasher: Masked Truth. Masked victims, left behind by the killer’s followers, are scattered across fixed locations around the map. Picking up a mask pushes the investigation forward, offering up clues that point toward the next lead.

Bethesda has only confirmed the opening investigation and the eventual final confrontation directly, but Fallout 76 community trackers who have gone through Patch 70 say the full hunt is designed to roll out in stages over several weeks rather than all at once:

  • Weeks 1 to 2: story quests investigating the murders and digging up graves for clues
  • Week 3: Pint-Sized Phantoms reportedly join Daily Ops as a new enemy faction
  • Week 4: Infestations marked with an unusual cloud icon start spawning Phantoms as well
  • Week 5: Phantoms reportedly turn up during Mischief Night events
  • Week 7: a crossover wave brings masked Phantoms alongside Spooky Scorched enemies
  • Week 9: Head Hunt events can spawn a Party Crasher version of the Slasher himself

That cadence has not been laid out by Bethesda in those exact terms, so treat the week-by-week order as a helpful roadmap rather than a locked schedule, especially since Bethesda’s own patch notes describe layered activities stacking on top of each other rather than a strict weekly checklist.

How to Beat the Pint-Sized Slasher (and His Phantoms)

Right now, on day one, there is no boss fight yet, the priority is working through The Slasher: Masked Truth by tracking down masked victims and reading the notes they leave behind. Once regular Pint-Sized Phantoms start showing up in Daily Ops, Infestations, and Mischief Night, treat them like other tough masked raiders: their clown-and-knife theme points to close-range melee attacks, so keeping distance with a rifle or shotgun and watching your positioning should help. According to community trackers, each Phantom has roughly a 10 percent chance to drop non-tradeable Pint-Sized Phantom Loot, similar to a Spooky Treat Bag, which can contain rare chems, cosmetics, or a temporary Ghost Boy invisibility buff.

The real boss fight, a supercharged Reborn Pint-Sized Slasher, is not expected to become available until later in the season, arriving as a rare four-star Party Crasher tied to the Head Hunt public event. The plan is to finish a standard Head Hunt first and stay ready in case the Party Crasher variant spawns afterward. One of its rumored drops is Severing, a legendary mod that boosts damage against bleeding targets, which hints that a bleed-focused build could be worth bringing once that fight goes live, though Bethesda has not detailed the encounter’s mechanics yet.

Rewards Worth Fighting For

  • Super Slasher, a unique weapon tied to the final Pint-Sized Slasher confrontation
  • Severing, a 4-star legendary mod that adds bonus damage against bleeding enemies
  • A unique Power Armor set earned from completing the Slasher storyline
  • Season 26 Tickets redeemable for the Batty Skirt outfit, Blood Moon Power Armor Paint, the Creepy Cultist Well decoration, and the Blood Moon Weather Control Station

Patch 70 is not just about the murder mystery, either. It also adds a Gen 9 performance boost for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X, unique weapon crafting for more than 80 named weapons at workbenches, and a new Legacy Seasons feature that lets players work toward one earlier season’s full reward track (currently Armor Ace and the Power Patrol) at the same time as Season 26, using a shared pool of Tickets. Between grave-robbing runs, there is plenty else to dig into while Appalachia’s newest killer builds toward his big reveal.
