Star Wars Battlefront 3 Is Reportedly in Development at Respawn and DICE, as EA Confirms the Studios Are Teaming Up

Amid the shock of EA shutting down BioWare this week, another piece of news slipped into the same restructuring announcement that could matter a lot to Star Wars fans. According to a new report, two of EA’s biggest shooter studios have been put together on a project that sounds a lot like the long awaited Star Wars: Battlefront 3.

EA Confirms a Respawn and DICE Collaboration

The confirmation came in the same joint memo from EA chief studios officer Cam Weber and chief operating officer David Tinson that detailed the BioWare closure and roughly 400 layoffs across the company. In it, the executives revealed that Apex Legends studio Respawn Entertainment and Battlefield developer DICE have been brought together to work on an unannounced project.

“Bringing together our Respawn and DICE studios to collaborate on a future project.”

EA, internal memo

EA itself did not name the project, but Variety reports, citing multiple sources, that the game in question is Star Wars: Battlefront 3. The memo also tied the collaboration to EA’s goal of building a shooter portfolio that keeps growing, pointing to lessons learned from Battlefield 6’s launch and ongoing live service.

A Long Rumored Sequel That May Finally Be Moving

DICE made the two most recent Battlefront games, released in 2015 and 2017. The second game launched into heavy criticism over its loot boxes, a controversy that briefly became one of gaming’s biggest stories, but Battlefront II still went on to become massively popular, and last year it even saw a sudden resurgence in player numbers on Steam. For years afterward, various reports suggested EA had quietly shelved plans for a third entry, so a confirmed team up between Respawn and DICE marks a notable change in direction.

The timing also lines up with an earlier rumor that Lucasfilm Games had been looking for a development partner for a new Battlefront game, with both DICE and Sony owned studio Bungie reportedly among the candidates being considered at the time.

More Star Wars and Shooter Plans From EA

The same memo reaffirmed EA’s commitment to Apex Legends, which the publisher says will keep getting new gameplay modes and other new experiences, and it reiterated that Marvel’s Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game remain two major upcoming releases for the studio. Star Wars as a franchise has already had a strong year in gaming, with the strategy title Zero Company, co-developed by Respawn, and the racing game Galactic Racer both landing well with critics in 2026.

Beyond confirming that Respawn and DICE are working together, neither EA nor Lucasfilm has shared any details on scope, platforms or a potential release window, so everything about what this project actually looks like remains a report for now. As we covered in our story on the BioWare shutdown, this week’s shake up is the first major restructuring at EA since its buyout by a Saudi backed consortium closed in August, and it is clearly reshaping where the publisher is willing to invest next.
