Jessica Biel Says the 7th Heaven Reboot Won’t Hold Back Like the Original
Jessica Biel got her start on screen playing Mary Camden on The WB’s 7th Heaven, three decades before trading the Camden family’s front porch for a seat behind the camera. Now producing the show’s upcoming reboot for CBS Studios, Biel sat down with Collider Ladies Night to share new details about how the modern version will handle subject matter the original series only touched on gently.
Why Biel Is Producing Instead of Starring
Biel has spent over two decades building her own production company, Iron Ocean Productions, which she co-founded in 2007. Rather than reprising her role as Mary, she’s channeling that experience into shaping the reboot from behind the scenes, telling Collider she’s focused on creating a safe, communicative set where the cast and crew can take on emotionally demanding material.

Jessica Biel currently stars opposite John Cena in Apple TV’s Matchbox: The Movie, her most recent film role before stepping into producing on the 7th Heaven reboot.
A Reboot That Won’t Shy Away From Harder Topics
According to Biel, the new version of 7th Heaven will keep the original’s focus on family and faith while addressing issues more directly than the WB series could in the mid-90s and 2000s, including technology, bullying, drugs, and alcohol. “We have less limitations now,” she said, while stressing the reboot still wants to keep the show’s family-friendly DNA intact so viewers can watch it together.
From a Mid-90s Family Drama to CBS’s New Era
The original 7th Heaven ran for eleven seasons and 243 episodes between 1996 and 2007, following Reverend Eric Camden and his family through coming-of-age storylines told from a Protestant perspective. CBS Studios has had the reboot in development with Biel as executive producer since 2025, though a release date and the rest of the cast haven’t been announced yet.
