AION 2 Hard Mode Guide: Krao Cave and Draupnir Requirements, Rewards and the Ariel Daevanion Board
AION 2’s endgame just got a lot more demanding. The October 21 update adds a brand-new difficulty to two of the game’s Expeditions, and with it a new Daevanion Board, a fresh source of Philosopher’s Stones and some of the best crafting materials in the game. This AION 2 Hard Mode guide explains how to unlock Hard mode in Krao Cave and Draupnir, which rules change, every reward you can earn, how the new Ariel Daevanion Board works and how to prepare your character before you queue. It reflects the global version of AION 2 as of the patch from October 20 (PDT) / October 21 (CEST), 2026.
What Is AION 2 Hard Mode?
Hard mode is a new, higher difficulty for two existing Expeditions, Krao Cave and Draupnir. According to the official patch notes from NC, no other Expeditions received a Hard difficulty with this update. Community guides list Krao Cave and Draupnir as the two 1-star Conquest Expeditions, so they are the dungeons you already know best, now with tighter rules and much better loot.

AION 2 Hard Mode Requirements and Rules
NC lists three key changes compared to Normal difficulty:
- Item Level 2600: you need an Item Level of at least 2600 to enter Hard mode in either dungeon.
- 4-minute Frenzy timer: the boss Frenzy timer is set to 4 minutes, so your group has a strict damage check on every boss.
- 3 revives per player: each player can only be revived three times, which makes careless deaths far more costly than on Normal.
Keep in mind that Item Level 2600 only gets you through the door. NC has not published an official Combat Power recommendation for Hard mode, and the Frenzy timer means an underpowered group can meet the entry requirement and still fail to beat the bosses in time. If your party keeps hitting the timer, a few more upgrades will usually do more than another attempt.

With a 4-minute Frenzy timer on every boss, Hard mode is as much a damage check as a test of survival.
Every Krao Cave and Draupnir Hard Mode Reward
The reason to put up with the stricter rules is the loot. According to the patch notes, Hard mode in Krao Cave and Draupnir offers:
- Philosopher’s Stone: Revelation (Bound): a chance to drop, and you can also select it as a guaranteed reward.
- Ariel Fragment (Bound): the currency for the new Ariel Daevanion Board. The type of Ariel Fragment you get varies by dungeon.
- Expedition Hero Artwork: a chance to drop as a collectible reward.
- More Kina: Hard mode pays out more Kina than Normal difficulty.
- Unique crafting materials: all Unique crafting materials, including Wrathful Mind, Wrathful Will and Wrathful Ego, are obtainable from Krao Cave and Draupnir on Hard.
Philosopher’s Stones are especially valuable for gear progression. According to community guides on Soul Binding, once every line on a Unique or Heroic piece is at 100% binding, you can spend two Philosopher’s Stones plus Kina to add an extra stat line, and Revelation is the type most pieces call for. NC hasn’t documented this step in detail in English yet, so check the tooltip on your own gear to see which stone it needs.
Hard Mode Achievements and Unique Skins
The update also adds new achievements for Expedition (Hard) and a new achievement for collecting Expedition Hero Artworks. Completing Expedition (Hard) achievements can reward Unique Skins, so cosmetic hunters have another reason to keep running both dungeons once their gear goals are covered.
The Ariel Daevanion Board Explained
Alongside Hard mode, NC added a brand-new Ariel Daevanion Board. According to the patch notes, Ariel Daevanion Points come from Ariel Fragments that drop in Expedition (Hard), which you then convert through Substance Morph. Here’s how the conversion works:
- Collect Ariel Fragments by clearing Krao Cave or Draupnir on Hard.
- Open Substance Morph > Special > Daevanion.
- Convert 100 Ariel Fragments into one Daevanion Crystal: Ariel (Bound). You can do this up to 30 times per character.
- Use the crystals to earn points on the Ariel Daevanion Board.
NC also notes that the amount you can get through Substance Morph is limited for each dungeon, so running only one of the two Expeditions may not be enough to fill the board. That makes it worth clearing both Krao Cave and Draupnir on Hard rather than farming a single favorite.
Spare fragments aren’t wasted either. Under Substance Morph > Special > Consumables, you can turn 1 Ariel Fragment into 5 Enhance Stones with no limit. A sensible approach is to prioritize your 30 crystal conversions for the board first, then send any extra fragments into Enhance Stones for your gear.
How to Prepare for AION 2 Hard Mode
Before you queue for your first Hard run, a little preparation goes a long way:
- Hit Item Level 2600 with room to spare: being right at the minimum makes the Frenzy timer much harder to beat.
- Know the Normal fights first: Hard mode uses the same dungeons, and with only three revives per player, learning the mechanics on Normal is far cheaper than learning them on Hard.
- Stock up on Resurrection Spiritstones: the new Rise to the Challenge event (see below) sells them for Kina, and NC explicitly ties the event to dungeon challenges.
- Plan your Philosopher’s Stone pick: since you can select Philosopher’s Stone: Revelation as a guaranteed reward, decide in advance which piece of gear you want to upgrade.
- Run both dungeons: the per-dungeon Substance Morph limits and the dungeon-specific Ariel Fragments both reward you for clearing Krao Cave and Draupnir.
Rise to the Challenge: Resurrection Spiritstones for Kina
To go with Hard mode, NC launched the Rise to the Challenge event. Until the maintenance on December 15, 2026 (PST) / December 16, 2026 (CET), you can buy Resurrection Spiritstone (Season 1) with Kina under Shop > Wind Breeze Merchants:
- Step 1: 30 Resurrection Spiritstones for 25,000 Kina, limited per server per week.
- Step 2: 30 Resurrection Spiritstones for 50,000 Kina, limited per server per week, and only available after you’ve reached the Step 1 limit.
The time-limited event stones are used before any permanent bound Resurrection Spiritstones in your inventory, they can’t be traded and they’re removed on December 16, 2026 (00:00 PST / 09:00 CET). In other words, buy what you’ll actually use and don’t stockpile them for later.
Other Changes in the Same Update
The patch also raised the maximum number of players who can enter the Abyss, increased the HP of the Dimensional Core in the Lower Abyss and of all Abyss bosses, and slightly enlarged the hitboxes of the Abyss bosses Kaira and Argo. On the class side, NC fixed Sorcerer damage issues with Cold Storm and Fire Wall and a visual bug on the Chanter’s Spinning Strike.
Final Thoughts
AION 2 Hard mode turns Krao Cave and Draupnir into proper endgame content: Item Level 2600 to enter, a 4-minute Frenzy timer and only three revives each, but in return you get Philosopher’s Stones, Unique crafting materials, Unique Skins and the Ariel Fragments that power the new Ariel Daevanion Board. Gear up beyond the minimum, learn the fights on Normal and clear both dungeons every week, and you’ll get the most out of the update.
