๐ข What Is the FBC? The Oldest House, Objects of Power and the Board
To understand any part of the Control story, you need four terms. The Federal Bureau of Control is a clandestine US government agency that investigates Altered World Events, paranatural incidents tied to the human collective unconscious that can bend reality. Its headquarters is the Oldest House, a Brutalist skyscraper in New York City that most people simply fail to notice, that is much larger on the inside than on the outside, and whose architecture shifts and rearranges itself.
AWEs can create Objects of Power, ordinary looking items with enormous paranatural abilities. The most important one is the Service Weapon, a shapeshifting gun. Whoever is chosen to wield it becomes Director of the FBC, and the one doing the choosing is the Board, a mysterious entity from the Astral Plane that speaks through an inverted black pyramid and never fully reveals its own agenda.
๐๏ธ The Ordinary AWE: How Jesse and Dylan Faden Were Separated
Seventeen years before the first game, Jesse and her younger brother Dylan lived in the small town of Ordinary, Maine. As children, they found a slide projector, an Object of Power that could open passages into other dimensions. Their experiments triggered what the FBC calls the Ordinary AWE, and the adult population of the town vanished.
The children were saved by Polaris, a mysterious telepathic presence that would guide Jesse for the rest of her life. When the FBC arrived, it captured Dylan and secured the slide projector, while Jesse fled with Polaris in her head. Inside the Bureau, Dylan became Prime Candidate 6, a test subject groomed as a potential future Director because of his immense powers. After he killed several agents, the FBC deemed him too dangerous and locked him away.
โ๏ธ Control Story Explained: Jesse Becomes Director and Fights the Hiss
In Control (2019), Jesse finally finds the Oldest House, guided by Polaris, in search of her brother. Inside, she discovers the body of Director Zachariah Trench, who has apparently taken his own life. She picks up his Service Weapon, is transported to the Astral Plane and appointed the new Director by the Board.
The building is in chaos. A hostile force Jesse calls the Hiss has possessed almost everyone inside, except for staff wearing Hedron Resonance Amplifiers (HRAs), devices built by the missing Head of Research Dr. Casper Darling. The Oldest House is on lockdown, and Jesse agrees to help the survivors retake it in exchange for information about Dylan. Her allies include research specialist Emily Pope, security chief Simon Arish, Head of Operations Helen Marshall and Ahti, a strange Finnish janitor who seems to know far more than he says. His cassette player helps Jesse navigate the shifting Ashtray Maze.

Jesse Faden fights her way through the Hiss-infested Oldest House in the original Control.
Piece by piece, the truth comes out. The Hiss reached the Oldest House through the slide projector from Ordinary, which the Bureau had used to explore an alternate dimension known as Slidescape-36. During those expeditions, Trench himself came under the influence of the Hiss and was manipulated into releasing it. The power source of the HRAs turns out to be a gigantic hexagonal entity from Slidescape-36 that Trench and Darling named the Hedron, and Jesse recognises it as Polaris. When she tries to free it, the Hiss destroys the Hedron.
Dylan, meanwhile, has openly embraced the Hiss. With the Hedron gone, the Hiss invades Jesse’s mind, but she discovers that part of Polaris still lives inside her and pushes the Hiss out. She then stops Dylan from using the slide projector to reach the Astral Plane and take over the Board. The Hiss is seemingly cleansed from him, but Dylan falls into a coma. The Oldest House stays under lockdown with the Hiss contained inside, and Jesse accepts her role as Director.
๐ชจ The Foundation DLC: Helen Marshall, the Nail and the Former
The first expansion, The Foundation (2020), sends Jesse to the crystalline caves beneath the Oldest House after an urgent call from the Board. There she finds the Nail, an obsidian monument that acts as a conduit between the Oldest House and the Astral Plane, and it has been badly damaged. Without it, the collision between both realms threatens to destroy them.
While repairing the Nail, Jesse meets the Former, a former member of the Board that offers her an alliance. At the base of the Nail she finds Helen Marshall, now possessed by the Hiss, and defeats her. Through the Hotline, Marshall’s remaining presence reveals that she damaged the Nail herself, both to stop the Hiss and to limit the Board’s control over the Bureau, and that the Board destroyed her HRA in response. Jesse’s trust in the Board is broken. She decides to run the FBC her own way, while letting the Board believe it is still in charge.
๐ฆ Is Control Connected to Alan Wake? AWE and the Remedy Connected Universe
Yes. The second expansion, AWE (2020), takes Jesse into the sealed Investigations Sector, where she is guided by visions of writer Alan Wake. She learns that the events of the 2010 game Alan Wake in Bright Falls, Washington, were an Altered World Event connected to Cauldron Lake. Dr. Emil Hartman, the psychiatrist from Alan Wake, was taken over by the Dark Presence and later contained by the FBC. The Hiss then amplified that darkness and twisted him into a monster, which Jesse destroys. AWE ends with the Bureau receiving a possible AWE report from Bright Falls that is dated several years in the future.
AWE officially created the Remedy Connected Universe. Alan Wake 2 (2023) follows up on it with FBC agent Kiran Estevez and her team arriving in Bright Falls, and its expansion The Lake House (2024) includes a scene in which Dylan Faden warns Estevez about a coming cataclysm in New York City, an early tease of the sequel. The Night Springs expansion also features an episode called “North Star” with an alternate fiction version of Jesse known as the Sibling. In 2025, Remedy also released the co-op spin-off FBC: Firebreak.
๐ Control Resonant Story Explained: Dylan, Manhattan and the Patterning
Control Resonant, developed and published by Remedy Entertainment and directed by Mikael Kasurinen, launched on September 24, 2026. It is set seven years after Control. At the very start, Jesse appears in Dylan’s containment cell and wakes him from his coma by stabbing him with the Aberrant, a shapeshifting Object of Power that becomes his melee weapon. Then she disappears.
Dylan wakes up to a disaster. The FBC’s HRA defenses have failed, and the Hiss has escaped the Oldest House into Manhattan. At the same time, a new Altered World Event dubbed the Patterning is folding the city in on itself and warping reality. The Mold, an aggressive fungal entity from a side mission of the first game, is spreading through the city as well. The Board recruits Dylan to deal with the crisis, and FBC field agent Zoe becomes his handler.
Back at the Oldest House, Emily Pope, now Head of Research and one of the Bureau’s acting leaders, lets Dylan stay free on one condition: he must wear a Mobile Containment Device (MCD) that can incapacitate or even kill him, and Zoe holds the switch. Since the Patterning seems to clash with the Hiss, Pope hopes to learn from it, so Dylan hunts powerful people and entities that the Patterning has mutated, known as Resonants.

Dylan Faden takes on a Resonant with the Aberrant, his shapeshifting Object of Power.
Things escalate quickly, and it becomes clear that the Patterning is trying to break into the Oldest House itself. Along the way, Dylan is repeatedly pulled into the spaces between dimensions, the Faults, where he meets Jesse. She left to seal these Faults and hold back the entity behind the Patterning, and she is upset to see Dylan working for the very Bureau that took his childhood. In the Faults, the siblings also relive memories of their life in Ordinary.
๐ท What Is the Patterning? The Second Hedron Explained
The final Fault lies inside the Oldest House, in the area where Dylan once went through the Bureau’s brutal Prime Candidate training. He and Jesse fail to close it, the Patterning breaks into the building, and Simon Arish is turned into a Resonant, forcing Dylan to kill him. Pope then reveals the truth: the Patterning is caused by a Hedron, the same kind of entity as the one that powered the HRAs in the first game. Unlike that weakened Hedron, this one is in its prime. It is fundamentally opposed to the Hiss and appears to have come to Earth to wipe it out, no matter how much damage it does to humanity in the process.
That is the central irony of Control Resonant. The thing that saved Jesse in 2019 was a Hedron, and the thing that nearly destroys New York in 2026 is one too. Whether this Hedron has any connection to Polaris is never confirmed, so any theory linking the two remains speculation.
๐ง Control Resonant Ending Explained: What Happened to Jesse Faden?
The Hedron tries to kill Dylan by shattering his mind, in a sequence that sends him through memories of his childhood in Ordinary. He pieces his mind back together and takes the fight directly to the Hedron. Even with Zoe activating his MCD, Dylan does not stop. He uses the power of the Hiss that still lingers inside him and destroys the Hedron, going against the Board’s orders.
The effort kills him, or at least it seems to. Then Jesse appears and refuses to let her brother go. She revives Dylan by essentially trading places with him, and in doing so Jesse falls into a coma herself. The roles from the first game are reversed: seven years ago, Jesse saved Dylan and he ended up in a coma, now Dylan is the one left standing.

Jesse and Dylan Faden, the two siblings at the heart of the Control series.
With the Hedron dead, the Patterning around Manhattan slowly begins to fade, although the city is far from back to normal. Emily Pope ends the game leading the Bureau as Acting Director. Dylan, who has every reason to hate the FBC, decides to stay on as an FBC contractor, working with Zoe and swearing to find a way to wake his sister. The Hiss and the Mold are still out there, and the Board remains as enigmatic as ever.
โ Open Questions and Fan Theories After Control Resonant
Remedy leaves plenty of threads open, and the following points are speculation, not confirmed lore:
- Can Jesse be woken up? Dylan’s vow is the obvious setup for a future story, possibly with Jesse back as a playable character
- Are there more Hedrons? If two Hedrons exist, fans wonder whether others could follow, and how they relate to the Hiss and to Polaris
- What does the Board really want? Dylan killed the Hedron against its orders, and Jesse already stopped trusting it in The Foundation
- Where is Dr. Casper Darling? The missing Head of Research from the first game is still one of the series’ biggest mysteries
- How does Alan Wake fit in? Since AWE and Alan Wake 2, many fans expect the two series to cross over again
๐ฎ Do You Need to Play Control Before Control Resonant?
No. Remedy designed Control Resonant to be accessible to newcomers. Still, the ending hits much harder if you know what Jesse went through in the Oldest House and how the first game ended for Dylan. If you want the full picture, Control Ultimate Edition includes the base game plus The Foundation and AWE. Remedy has also named Attack on Titan and Neon Genesis Evangelion as narrative touchpoints for the sequel, which explains a lot about its tone.
