ποΈ What Is Fabletown? The World of The Wolf Among Us
Long ago, the characters of fairy tales, folklore and legends lived in their own worlds, known as the Homelands. A mysterious conqueror called the Adversary overran them, and the survivors fled to our world. In New York City they founded Fabletown, a hidden community in Manhattan, with the Woodlands building as its administrative heart.
The most important rule is secrecy. Fables who do not look human, such as talking animals, trolls or giants, must buy a magical disguise called a glamour. Those who cannot afford one are sent to the Farm, a remote community in upstate New York. As the game shows again and again, glamours are expensive, and many poorer Fables are barely getting by.
Keeping order is Bigby Wolf, the former Big Bad Wolf and son of the North Wind, who has been granted a fresh start as Fabletown’s sheriff. Most citizens still fear and distrust him. Working alongside him is Snow White (voiced by Erin Yvette), the assistant to Deputy Mayor Ichabod Crane, who runs Fabletown while Mayor King Cole is away and treats Snow with open contempt.

πͺ Episode 1, Faith: The Head on the Doorstep
The story begins when Mr. Toad calls Bigby about a disturbance in his building. Bigby finds the Woodsman, drunk and violent, attacking a young woman. After a brutal fight, the woman introduces herself as Faith. Before they part, she tells Bigby, “You’re not as bad as everyone says you are.” Remember that line, because it becomes the key to the ending.
The next morning, Snow White wakes Bigby with terrible news. Faith’s severed head has been left on the doorstep of the Woodlands. Faith turns out to be the princess from the fairy tale Donkeyskin, married to Prince Lawrence. The couple had fallen deep into debt, and Faith had turned to prostitution to survive. Bigby’s search leads him to the Tweedles, a pair of shady private investigators, and to the Trip Trap bar, where he clashes with the bar’s owner Holly and the hulking Grendel.
The episode ends with a shock. Bigby returns to the Woodlands, now surrounded by police, and finds a second severed head on the doorstep. It appears to belong to Snow White.
πͺ Episode 2, Smoke and Mirrors: Lily and Ichabod Crane
Bigby is held for questioning by the NYPD until Ichabod Crane uses magic to wipe the officers’ memories. Then comes the relief: Snow is alive. The second victim was Lily, a troll and the sister of Holly, wearing a glamour that made her look like Snow White.
The trail leads to the Pudding & Pie, a strip club owned by the pimp Georgie Porgie, where Faith had also worked. A dancer named Nerissa, who once was the Little Mermaid, quietly points Bigby to a motel. There, in the room where Lily was killed, Bigby finds a photo that changes everything: Lily, disguised as Snow White, together with Ichabod Crane. Crane had been paying for a twisted fantasy built around his obsession with Snow.
When Bigby and Snow return to the Woodlands, Crane has already fled. Before running, he smashed the Magic Mirror, the office’s all-seeing oracle, and took one of its shards with him so he could not be tracked.

π« Episode 3, A Crooked Mile: Crane’s Arrest and the Silver Bullet
At Lily’s funeral, the Tweedles show up armed, warn Bigby to stop looking for Crane and open fire before escaping. The investigation reveals that Crane had been embezzling Fabletown’s money to pay off his debts to a loan shark known only as the Crooked Man. A visit to the witch Aunty Greenleaf, who sells black-market glamours, points Bigby back to the Pudding & Pie.
There, Crane is trying to use a magic ring to break the spell on the club’s women, but the ring no longer works. Snow does not believe he is the killer, yet she and Bigby arrest him for embezzlement. Crane uses the moment to confess his love to Snow, who rejects him.
Outside, the Tweedles and the Crooked Man’s enforcer Bloody Mary ambush them and demand Crane. Bigby turns into his wolf form, but Mary shoots him with silver, one of the few things that can seriously hurt him. To save Bigby’s life, Snow lets Mary take Crane.
π Episode 4, In Sheep’s Clothing: The Crooked Man’s Empire
Bigby wakes up on the operating table of Dr. Swineheart, who removes the silver from his body. Snow, now determined to enforce Fabletown’s rules more strictly, wants to send unglamoured Fables to the Farm, and Bigby has to decide what happens to his old friend Colin, one of the Three Little Pigs.
Bigby slowly uncovers how deep the Crooked Man’s influence goes. Desperate Fables, including Beauty, have borrowed money from him. Worse, he runs an illegal glamour operation that uses the women of the Pudding & Pie as forced labour. A fight at the Lucky Pawn with the Jersey Devil, where the Woodsman unexpectedly ends up on Bigby’s side, leads Bigby to the missing mirror shard.
Once Bufkin repairs the Magic Mirror, it reveals where the Crooked Man is hiding. Bigby arrives to find him surrounded by his people, including the Tweedles, the Jersey Devil, Georgie and Vivian, the club’s hostess. The episode ends with that standoff.

π Who Killed Faith and Lily? The Ribbons Explained
The final episode, Cry Wolf, answers the central question. The Crooked Man gives up Georgie Porgie as the man who killed Faith and Lily, and Georgie later admits that the Crooked Man ordered the killings.
The game also explains why none of the women ever talked. Each of them wears a ribbon around her neck. Vivian is the original “girl with the ribbon” from the old tale, and the other ribbons copy her curse: the wearer cannot speak about the club’s business, and removing the ribbon makes her head fall off. That is the dark secret behind the beheadings. When Vivian removes her own ribbon and dies, the curse breaks and the other women can finally speak.
Georgie dies too, either at Bigby’s hands or left to die of his wounds, but not before revealing where the Crooked Man is hiding. At a foundry, Bigby faces Bloody Mary and finally unleashes his full wolf form to kill her.
βοΈ The Crooked Man’s Fate: Every Possible Outcome
With the Crooked Man cornered, the player makes the biggest decision of the game. Bigby can kill him on the spot at the foundry, or bring him back to Fabletown to face its people. If Bigby kills him, Snow is furious, and the body can end up in the Witching Well, the magical well where Fabletown disposes of its dead.
If the Crooked Man stands trial, he cleverly turns the crowd against Bigby and Snow by pointing out how badly Fabletown’s leaders have treated its poorer citizens. Then Nerissa, freed from the ribbon’s curse, testifies that he ordered the murders. Bigby decides the sentence:
- Imprisonment, Aunty Greenleaf turns him into a crow and he is locked in a cage
- The Witching Well, he is thrown into the well
- Execution, Bigby tears his head off, leaving the crowd horrified and afraid of their sheriff
Whatever you choose, the big picture stays the same. The Crooked Man is gone, Fabletown’s poor are still struggling, and many Fables who can no longer afford glamours prepare to leave for the Farm.
π§ The Wolf Among Us Ending Explained: Nerissa’s Confession
Just before the credits, Nerissa visits Bigby one last time and tells him the truth. Faith, Lily and Nerissa had planned to escape the Pudding & Pie together. Faith stole the photo of Crane and Lily to use as leverage. Nerissa panicked and told Georgie about the plan, which led to Faith’s death. Because the ribbon stopped her from speaking, she left Faith’s head on the Woodlands’ doorstep so that Bigby would start investigating. She also admits that she had no real proof that the Crooked Man gave the order when she accused him.
Then, as she leaves, Nerissa says the exact words Faith said to Bigby at the start of the game: he is not as bad as everyone says. Bigby freezes. A flashback montage runs through his memories of the case, and he realizes something does not add up. The player can follow Nerissa or let her go, but the game ends either way, with no answer.
π€ Is Nerissa Faith? The Two Big Fan Theories
The repeated line is the only hard clue, and fans have built two main theories around it. Both are speculation, not confirmed canon.
- Theory 1: Nerissa was Faith in Episode 1, the real Faith was already dead, and the woman Bigby rescued from the Woodsman was Nerissa wearing a glamour of Faith, steering Bigby onto the case
- Theory 2: Faith is alive as Nerissa, the head on the doorstep was really Nerissa’s, and the woman calling herself Nerissa at the end is Faith in disguise, finally free
Both theories rely on glamours, which the game establishes can change a Fable’s appearance completely, as Lily’s disguise as Snow proves. Neither can be proven from what is shown on screen. Telltale itself declined to explain the ending, and in 2017, Telltale’s Job Stauffer said a second season would not directly pick up the storyline and would leave it as an open mystery. Whether the new team behind The Wolf Among Us 2 sticks to that remains to be seen.
π How The Wolf Among Us Connects to Fables
The Wolf Among Us is an official prequel to the Fables comics, set roughly twenty years before Fables #1. Many of its characters, including Bigby, Snow White, Ichabod Crane, Bluebeard, Mr. Toad, Colin and Bufkin, come straight from the comic, and the game’s 1986 setting shows them years before the events readers know. The game was later adapted into the comic series Fables: The Wolf Among Us by Lilah Sturges and Dave Justus, launched digitally in December 2014.
You do not need to have read the comics to follow the game, but readers will spot plenty of foreshadowing, especially in the tense, slowly warming relationship between Bigby and Snow.
π The Wolf Among Us Remastered and The Wolf Among Us 2 Story: What We Know
The Wolf Among Us Remastered launches on October 29, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, from Telltale with PM Studios as co-publisher. It includes all five episodes and keeps the original story and choices intact. According to Telltale, every scene has been relit and the characters rebuilt, and a new Noir Mode gives the game a black-and-white film look.

The Wolf Among Us 2 has had a long and troubled road. A second season was first announced in 2017, cancelled when Telltale closed in 2018, revived at The Game Awards 2019, and delayed several times after that. At Summer Game Fest 2026, it was reintroduced with a 2027 release window. Telltale leads creative development and narrative direction, while PM Studios supports publishing. According to Telltale, the story is set only five months after the events of the original game. Beyond that premise, the plot is still under wraps, so anything about Faith, Nerissa or the Crooked Man’s legacy in the sequel is pure speculation for now.
β Quick Questions About The Wolf Among Us Story
Who killed Faith in The Wolf Among Us?
Georgie Porgie killed Faith and Lily. Georgie admits the Crooked Man ordered it, although Nerissa later confesses she had no proof of that order when she testified.
Who put Faith’s head on the Woodlands doorstep?
Nerissa. The ribbon’s curse kept her from talking, so she used the head to get Bigby involved.
Was Nerissa Faith all along?
The game never says. The repeated line is a deliberate hint, but Telltale has not confirmed any theory.
What happened to Ichabod Crane?
Snow hands him to Bloody Mary to save Bigby, and the repaired Magic Mirror later shows him being ordered to fly to Paris and keep quiet. The game does not show him again.
Do you need to play The Wolf Among Us before The Wolf Among Us 2?
It is strongly recommended, since the sequel continues the first game’s story. The remaster arrives in October 2026, well ahead of the sequel’s 2027 window.
Final Words
The Wolf Among Us is a murder mystery that solves its case and then quietly opens a new one. Bigby finds the killer, brings down the Crooked Man and learns how much Fabletown’s poorest citizens have suffered, only for Nerissa’s last words to make him question everything he thought he knew. More than a decade later, that final scene remains unanswered. With the remaster on the way and the sequel set for 2027, there has never been a better time to return to Fabletown and look for the clues yourself.
