Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest Gets a June 2029 Release Date, With A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Director Owen Harris at the Helm

Warner Bros. Pictures has set a release date for Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, confirming the film will hit theaters on June 1, 2029. It’s the first theatrical movie in the Game of Thrones franchise, based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire universe, and it dramatizes Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros centuries before the events of the original HBO series and its prequel, House of the Dragon.

A Director Who Already Knows the Targaryens

Directing duties go to Owen Harris, best known for Black Mirror and Mrs. Davis, who also served as executive producer and directed episodes of HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The screenplay comes from Beau Willimon, the House of Cards creator who also wrote for Andor, pairing a director and writer who’ve both spent recent years balancing political intrigue with character drama in prestige genre TV.

Production still from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, directed by Owen Harris

Owen Harris previously directed episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, HBO’s prequel series set in roughly the same era as Aegon’s Conquest.

The film follows Aegon Targaryen and his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya as they wage a lightning campaign across Westeros, unifying six of the Seven Kingdoms within about two years through a mix of dragonfire, diplomacy, and outright conquest. Only Dorne successfully holds out against House Targaryen, a chapter of Westerosi history that book readers have waited years to see brought to the screen.

A Long Time Coming

Warner Bros. first confirmed Aegon’s Conquest as a theatrical film back in April 2026, after Martin spent years describing the project as potentially too big in scope for a normal TV budget. This week’s news fills in the two biggest blanks, who’s directing and when audiences can actually see it, though no cast has been announced yet. With House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms both continuing on HBO, and talk of a Jon Snow sequel still floating around, Aegon’s Conquest gives Warner Bros. Discovery a third active branch of the Thrones family tree, this one aimed squarely at the big screen.
