Kit Harington Says a Jon Snow Sequel Could Still Work, and Game of Thrones Fans Want the Targaryen Line to Live On
Winter might not be done with Westeros yet. Kit Harington told the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he feels more comfortable with Jon Snow than he did in the past, and that a Jon Snow sequel could still work if the right story turns up. The Hollywood Reporter shared his comments on September 21, which land a couple of years after the actor said the project was off the table.
What Harington Said About the Jon Snow Sequel
Asked about the Game of Thrones follow-up that HBO developed and then shelved, Harington said the team worked on it for around two years. He still believes there is a version that could succeed, telling the podcast, “I still think there’s a world in which something could work.” According to Harington, he, HBO, and author George R.R. Martin all agreed from the start that they would only move forward with the right story, and that not making it would be better than making a weak one. After thinking it over, he was the one who felt the idea wasn’t quite right yet.
What has changed since then is Harington himself. He says he has done plenty of other work in the meantime and now feels more at ease with the character and the world, and with where Jon Snow sits in his life.

A Spin-Off That Keeps Coming Back From the Dead
The Jon Snow sequel was first reported in June 2022, with Martin later saying that Harington himself brought the idea to HBO. By April 2024, Harington told the Associated Press that it was “off the table for the foreseeable.” HBO boss Casey Bloys later left the door open at a press event in November 2024, saying “Maybe we’ll try again,” according to Deadline.
This year the project has shown fresh signs of life. The Hollywood Reporter’s January profile of Martin described the original pitch as Jon living alone as a broken man dealing with PTSD, having driven off his direwolf Ghost and thrown away his sword Longclaw, and reported that a new writer, Quoc Dang Tran, had since come aboard, with the story possibly shifting to the Mediterranean-like land of Essos. In May, Harington told a Motor City Comic Con crowd that the show was not officially dead, while stressing that nothing was being planned at that point. His latest comments are the warmest yet, though there is still no greenlight and no official announcement from HBO.
Why Fans Want Jon to Carry the Targaryen Line
For a big part of the Game of Thrones community, this isn’t just about nostalgia. Jon Snow is Aegon Targaryen, and when the show ended he was the last known Targaryen still standing. Many fans argue that if HBO wants the bloodline to continue in the main story, a Jon sequel is the most natural way to do it, and right now it looks like our only real chance to see it.
The timing is interesting, too. House of the Dragon is keeping the Targaryens front and center, and our A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms review showed how much life the franchise still has outside the original series. With Westeros back in the spotlight after the show’s 15th anniversary, a story that finally follows the show’s own Targaryen survivor would fill a gap that prequels can’t.
What Harington Is Doing Next
Harington is heading back to HBO in a very different franchise. He was cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter Season 2 after Nicholas Hoult stepped away over scheduling, something we covered in our Harry Potter Season 2 casting roundup. Whether Jon Snow follows is still an open question, but for the first time in a while, Harington sounds like he wants the answer to be yes.
