The Witcher 3 Remastered Launches September 29, and CD Projekt Red’s Producer Says It’s ‘Hard to Go Back’ to the Original

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered launches September 29 as a free upgrade for existing owners on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, and CD Projekt Red says the changes go deeper than a simple visual polish. In a new interview, executive producer Jakub Kutrzuba laid out just how much of the decade-old RPG is getting reworked before players jump back into Geralt’s last adventure.

A Full Pass on Animation, Combat, and Pathfinding

According to Kutrzuba, the remaster touches systems that have gone untouched since the game’s original 2015 release: animations, camera work, enemy behavior in combat, and pathfinding all got attention, alongside a wider set of quality of life adjustments. “We are touching these aspects of the game which weren’t touched since we launched it,” Kutrzuba said. The goal, he explained, was to bring The Witcher 3 up to the standard of games releasing today, close enough that going back to the original version now feels like a step down.

Two Performance Modes on PS5 Pro, Plus Steam Deck Support

On PS5 Pro, players will be able to choose between a Ray Tracing Mode running at a locked 60fps, up from a 30fps cap on base PS5, or a Performance Mode that removes the frame cap entirely and should settle around 90fps on a VRR capable display, both powered by Sony’s PSSR upscaler. CD Projekt Red has also said the remaster should run well on Steam Deck, though it hasn’t confirmed an official Steam Deck Verified rating yet.

The remaster was first revealed back in August at Gamescom Opening Night Live, where CD Projekt Red also gave fans a first look at the upcoming expansion Songs of the Past. It’s part of a busier than usual stretch for the studio, which recently discussed why The Witcher 4 is being built on Unreal Engine 5 instead of the in-house REDengine that powered the original trilogy. For now, all eyes are on September 29, when the remaster goes live as a free update for anyone who already owns The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
