God of War Amazon Series Will Recast Atreus and Thrúd as Teenagers for Season 2

Amazon’s live-action God of War series already went through one unexpected cast change this year, and now a second one is on the way, this time by design rather than accident. A newly surfaced casting call confirms that both Atreus and Thrúd will be recast with older actors once the show moves into Season 2, a change the production says was planned from the very start.

Why Atreus and Thrúd Are Being Recast

Callum Vinson and Island Austin currently play the younger versions of Atreus and Thrúd in Season 1, but casting notices for Season 2 are looking for teenage replacements to reflect how much time passes across the story. The breakdown for Atreus, listed under the teen placeholder name “Joshua,” describes a character who “went on a daring and dangerous adventure” and is “eager to learn more about the truth.” Thrúd’s breakdown, under the placeholder name “Ruth,” calls for someone “wise beyond her years” with “a complicated relationship with her parents.” Both roles are written to require comfort with physical combat, including archery and hand-to-hand action work.

How This Differs From the Kratos Recast

It’s worth separating this from the show’s other recent cast shake-up. As we covered when Dave Bautista replaced Ryan Hurst as Kratos, that switch happened because Hurst tore a bicep on set and needed surgery, forcing an emergency recast mid-shoot. The Atreus and Thrúd changes are different: production has described the aging-up as a creative decision baked into the plan from the beginning, tied to the fact that Seasons 1 and 2 were always going to be shot back to back. Filming is currently on hiatus following the Kratos recast and is expected to resume in Vancouver this October.

What This Means for Season 2’s Story

The series has been described as adapting 2018’s God of War and its sequel God of War Ragnarök across its two-season order, and aging up Atreus and Thrúd specifically for Season 2 would line up with how much older both characters look and act by the time Ragnarök’s story kicks in. In the games, Atreus goes from a child learning to hunt to a teenager wrestling with his own godhood and identity, and Thrúd grows from a small girl into someone caught between her father Thor and the rest of her family. Casting older actors for the second batch of episodes strongly suggests Season 2 will lean into that same Ragnarök-era material rather than stretching the first game’s timeline any further.

In the games, Atreus visibly ages between the 2018 God of War and Ragnarök, the same jump Amazon’s series now appears to be building toward with its Season 2 casting.

When Does God of War Premiere on Prime Video?

No premiere date has been set yet. With production paused until October and both seasons still shooting back to back under showrunner Ronald D. Moore, a 2027 debut remains the most likely target. We’ll keep this post updated as Amazon shares more casting news or a release window for Season 1.
