Dave Bautista Officially Cast as Kratos in Amazon’s God of War Series
It’s official: Dave Bautista is the new Kratos. Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television have confirmed that the former WWE Champion and Guardians of the Galaxy star has taken over the lead role in the live-action God of War series, replacing original star Ryan Hurst following a serious on-set injury. After weeks of rumors and reported negotiations, the casting news dropped this week, and it’s already one of the biggest talking points in gaming right now.
Why Was Kratos Recast?
Ryan Hurst, known for his role in Sons of Anarchy, was originally cast as Kratos when the series began filming back in February. Four episodes were reportedly already in the can when Hurst tore a bicep performing a stunt on set in late June, an injury serious enough to require surgery and a recovery timeline that would have delayed production into 2027. Rather than wait, Amazon and Sony made the call to recast the role entirely, with the previously shot Hurst footage expected to be reshot from scratch.
Why Bautista Fits the Role
Bautista’s build and physicality made him an early favorite for the part once the recast talks began. The 57-year-old former wrestler is no stranger to demanding physical roles, having just wrapped the upcoming Highlander reboot, which required him to bulk up for the role of the Kurgan. He’s also not new to the gaming world: Bautista previously appeared as a playable model swap for Marcus Fenix in Gears 5, a role he had publicly campaigned for.
Production is expected to resume this fall in Vancouver, where the series has been based since filming began. The show remains a two-season order, shot back-to-back, with showrunner Ronald D. Moore (For All Mankind, Outlander) still steering the project.
What Is Amazon’s God of War Series About?
The series adapts the story of the 2018 God of War and its sequel Ragnarök, following Kratos and his son Atreus as they journey through the Nine Realms to scatter the ashes of Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother. Along the way, Kratos tries to teach his son to become a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father to become a better man.
The rest of the cast remains unchanged around Bautista’s casting. Callum Vinson stays on as Atreus, alongside Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn as Brok, and Jeff Gulka as Sindri.
When Does God of War Premiere?
No official premiere date has been announced yet, and with production only resuming this fall, the series isn’t expected to arrive on Prime Video until sometime in 2027. We’ll keep this post updated as Amazon shares more details on Bautista’s first appearance as Kratos.
