HeroQuest: Digital Edition Brings the Classic Tabletop Dungeon Crawl to Steam in 2027

Nomad Games and publisher Balor Games have revealed HeroQuest: Digital Edition, an officially licensed PC adaptation of Avalon Hill’s classic tabletop dungeon crawler. Unveiled during The MIX Fall Showcase, the digital version is scheduled to launch on Steam in 2027, with a closed beta playtest coming sooner.

Bashing Goblins Solo or With Four Friends

HeroQuest: Digital Edition is based on the American version of the board game, so longtime fans shouldn’t expect to see Morcar show up as the villain. Instead, the sinister sorcerer Zargon is once again the threat, sending waves of goblins, traps, and other dungeon dangers at the party.

“a perilous quest into the dungeon to destroy the forces of Dread.”

Players take on the Barbarian, Dwarf, Elf, and Wizard, with online co-op supporting up to four people controlling the heroes together. A fifth player can optionally join as Zargon, plotting ambushes and springing traps against the rest of the group. Solo players aren’t left out either, since the game can run the entire party alone while the computer takes over as the Evil Wizard.

Tactical turn-based combat and dice rolls carry over from the tabletop original into HeroQuest: Digital Edition.

A Built-In Quest Editor and Mod.io Support

The most interesting feature so far is the included Quest Editor, which lets players design their own maps and missions rather than only replaying the campaigns that ship with the game. Built-in mod.io integration then lets players browse and download quests the community has made, a feature that should keep the dungeon crawling going long after the main story is done.

The adaptation comes from Nomad Games, the studio behind digital versions of tabletop games like Talisman, Love Letter, and Fury of Dracula, with Balor Games publishing. Balor was formed by former leaders of Humble Games and focuses on long-term support for its catalog, which bodes well for a board game adaptation that’s likely to keep growing through its Quest Editor and mod support.

HeroQuest: Digital Edition doesn’t have a firm release date beyond “2027” yet, but a closed beta playtest is coming soon. Players interested in trying it early can wishlist the game on Steam now to get notified once sign-ups or a release date are announced.
