Rust Blueprint Fragments, Pages and Books Explained: How the New Tech Tree Works and Where to Find Them
Rust’s November 2026 update completely changed how you unlock items. Scrap no longer pays for the tech trees. Instead, every node now costs a blueprint item, and you need three different kinds of them: Rust blueprint fragments, pages and books. In this guide, we explain what each blueprint tier unlocks, how to turn fragments into pages, where to find books, what the research table and workbenches cost now and how to plan your first wipe under the new system.
Quick answer: Blueprint Fragments unlock the Workbench Level 1 and Engineering Workbench tech trees, Blueprint Pages unlock the Workbench Level 2 tree and Blueprint Books unlock the Workbench Level 3 tree, at one blueprint item per node. Ten Fragments can be combined into one Page, but Pages can’t be turned into Books. Scrap is still used for the research table and for crafting workbenches.
π What Changed With Blueprints in Rust
Facepunch released the blueprint rework with the “Printed and Polished” update and force wipe on November 5, 2026. According to the official devblog on Steam and the official changelist, these are the key changes:
- No more scrap on the tech trees: nodes are now paid with blueprint items instead.
- Three blueprint tiers: Blueprint Fragment, Blueprint Page and Blueprint Book, one for each tech tree level.
- Old items removed: the Basic Blueprint Fragment and Advanced Blueprint Fragment are gone.
- Workbenches no longer need fragments: they cost scrap again instead.
- Research still uses scrap: you can still learn any item you hold at the research table.
Facepunch says the goal is to remove early game friction. Under the old system, the fragments needed for a Workbench Level 2 mostly came from contested monuments, so groups that couldn’t compete there were locked out. The lowest blueprint tier now drops from everyday loot like barrels and boxes, while puzzle rooms and harder content remain the fastest way to progress. The developers also want trading and alliances to matter more again. This guide reflects the game as of the November 5, 2026 update. Facepunch has already said it will adjust the system when needed, so drop rates and costs can change in later patches.
π Rust Blueprint Fragments, Pages and Books Explained
| Blueprint item | What it unlocks | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Blueprint Fragment | Workbench Level 1 tech tree and Engineering Workbench tech tree | Common loot such as barrels and basic crates |
| Blueprint Page | Workbench Level 2 tech tree | Puzzle rooms, supply drops, mid-tier loot, or combine 10 Fragments |
| Blueprint Book | Workbench Level 3 tech tree | High-tier loot only, can’t be crafted |
Each node on a tech tree costs one blueprint item of the matching tier. That means a cheap Workbench Level 2 item and an expensive one now cost the same single Page, which makes the order in which you unlock things more important than before.
π How to Turn Blueprint Fragments Into Pages
Blueprint Fragments are the only tier you can upgrade. Ten Blueprint Fragments make one Blueprint Page, so a few hours of barrel runs can also push you into the Workbench Level 2 tree. Pages, however, can’t be upgraded into Books. Every Workbench Level 3 unlock needs a Book you actually looted, so Books are the real bottleneck of the new system.
Before you combine Fragments, think about your Workbench Level 1 tree. Fragments you turn into Pages are gone for good, so it can make sense to grab the Level 1 basics you need first and only then convert the rest.
π’οΈ Where to Find Rust Blueprint Fragments
Fragments are deliberately easy to find now. Based on the loot data published by community trackers, these are the main sources:
- Barrels: blue and yellow roadside barrels have roughly a one in six chance to drop a Fragment.
- Crates and boxes: basic crates can drop one, and normal roadside crates have about a 20 percent chance to drop two.
- Fishing: gutting a Catfish, Orange Roughy, Salmon or Small Shark has about a 20 percent chance to give you a Fragment.
In practice, a classic road or rail run now builds your Workbench Level 1 tree and your scrap pile at the same time.

The new roaming scientist boats are one of several fresh sources for Blueprint Pages.
π Where to Find Rust Blueprint Pages
Pages largely took over the spots where the old Basic Blueprint Fragments used to drop, plus a few new sources:
- Keycard puzzle rooms: monuments with puzzle rooms, such as the Power Plant, Train Yard, Water Treatment Plant, Airfield and Underwater Labs, hand out several Pages per run.
- Supply drops: each supply drop currently contains two Pages.
- Military crates and road scientists: green military crates and scientists along the roads have a small chance to drop one.
- Treasure mission boxes: the hunter missions at the Large Barn and Ranch have a 50 percent chance to reward a Page.
- Scientist boats: the patrolling RHIBs and PT boats carry loot boxes that can contain Pages.
- Metal detector: Pages can also turn up when you sweep roads and rails with a metal detector.
- Upgrading: combine ten Fragments into one Page.
The new mainland scientist boats deserve a special mention. Facepunch describes them as a rare patrol of up to two groups that roam around the main island for up to an hour. They only engage geared players and don’t show up with a map marker or notification, so keep an eye on the water. If you farm livestock, check out our guide on how to breed cows and sheep in Rust, as loot data shows the livestock vendor can also pay out Pages.
π Where to Find Rust Blueprint Books
Books can’t be crafted, so you have to take on endgame content to get them:
- Hackable locked crates: the crates from the Chinook, the oil rigs and similar events are the most reliable source.
- High-tier puzzle rooms: the keycard puzzles at Launch Site, Military Tunnel, the Missile Silo and Underwater Labs.
- Elite crates: about a one in ten chance per crate.
Because Books are scarce, groups that regularly run oil rigs, locked crates and high-tier monuments will reach the Workbench Level 3 tree first. Solo players and small groups can trade for Books or pick a short list of must-have Level 3 unlocks.
π¬ Rust Research Table and Workbench Costs After the Update
Scrap didn’t disappear. It moved back into the workbench recipes and the research table. The research table still works the same way: put in an item you found, pay scrap and learn its blueprint. It just costs more now, depending on the item’s rarity:
| Item rarity | Research table cost |
|---|---|
| Common | 20 scrap |
| Uncommon | 40 scrap |
| Rare | 100 scrap |
| Very rare | 300 scrap |
The workbenches are back to their scrap recipes without any blueprint items:
| Workbench | Crafting cost |
|---|---|
| Workbench Level 1 | 50 Scrap, 500 Wood, 100 Metal Fragments |
| Workbench Level 2 | 500 Scrap, 500 Metal Fragments, 25 High Quality Metal |
| Workbench Level 3 | 1,250 Scrap, 1,000 Metal Fragments, 100 High Quality Metal |
As before, you still need a Workbench Level 1 to craft a Level 2 and a Level 2 to craft a Level 3.
π§° Salvage and Prototype Workbench Upgrades
The two workbench upgrades that used to affect scrap costs on the tech tree were reworked for blueprints:
- Salvage Workbench Upgrade: instead of reducing the scrap cost, it now has a 20 percent chance to not consume a blueprint when you unlock a node.
- Prototype Workbench Upgrade: it now has a flat 25 percent success rate, and the old cost doubling has been removed.
If you find a Salvage upgrade early, it is worth installing. A one in five chance of a free unlock adds up quickly over a full wipe.

The new Uzi 9mm arrived in the same update as the blueprint rework.
π‘ Tips for Your First Wipe With the New Blueprint System
- Loot everything early: barrels and roadside crates now give you scrap and Fragments, so road and rail runs are more valuable than ever.
- Don’t convert Fragments too early: unlock the Workbench Level 1 essentials first, then turn the leftovers into Pages.
- Use the research table for single items: if you loot one copy of a key item, researching it with scrap can save a blueprint item for something else on the tree.
- Plan your Books: decide which Workbench Level 3 nodes you really need before you spend a single Book.
- Trade: blueprint items are now a currency of their own. Facepunch explicitly wants players to trade and team up for items again.
- Check your server: community and modded servers can change loot tables and costs, so values may differ from official servers.
β Rust Blueprint FAQ
