HBO’s Harry Potter Officially Casts James and Lily Potter, Plus Charlie Weasley
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is now only two months from its HBO premiere, and the network has just filled in three more supporting roles, two of which carry outsized weight in the franchise’s mythology. HBO has officially confirmed that Harry Gilby has joined the Season 1 cast as Charlie Weasley, while Jasper Talbot and Hannah Chinn have been cast as James Potter and Lily Potter, Harry’s parents, whose deaths set the entire saga in motion.
Why James and Lily Potter Matter So Much
James and Lily were marked for death by Lord Voldemort when Harry was just one year old, and Lily’s decision to stand between her son and the Killing Curse is the reason Harry survives at all, the sacrifice that defines him for the rest of the story. Neither character lives to see Harry grow up, but both recur throughout all seven books through memories, photographs, and the people who knew them, which makes casting Talbot and Chinn one of the more consequential decisions the production has made so far. Voldemort himself still hasn’t been cast.

Katherine Parkinson’s Molly Weasley now has company, with Harry Gilby joining the family as her son Charlie in HBO’s Harry Potter.
A Weasley Who Never Got His Movie Moment
Charlie Weasley is the second-oldest of the Weasley children, working with dragons in Romania, a detail the books mention often but the eight-film series never found room to show on screen. Giving him an actual appearance is a small but telling sign of how much more space a multi-season television adaptation has to work with, compared to a franchise that had to compress seven books into eight movies.
Building Out the Wizarding World
Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout continue to lead the series as Harry, Hermione, and Ron, alongside John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, and Warwick Davis as Filius Flitwick. Season 2’s Chamber of Secrets casting has been filling in just as steadily, with Kit Harington already attached as Gilderoy Lockhart and Rafe Spall’s Arthur Weasley reportedly already filming scenes opposite Lockhart and Lucius Malfoy, well ahead of Season 1 even reaching an audience.
The series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes and J.K. Rowling serving as an executive producer alongside original film producer David Heyman. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premieres on HBO and HBO Max on December 25.
