Jennifer Lawrence Joins Zach Cregger’s New Line Sci-Fi Thriller ‘The Flood’
Jennifer Lawrence is headlining Zach Cregger’s next film. Deadline and TheWrap reported on September 29 that Lawrence has boarded The Flood, an original science fiction thriller from the Resident Evil and Weapons director, with New Line Cinema producing and Warner Bros. distributing.
A Reunion With New Line
The pairing reunites Cregger with New Line following 2025’s Weapons, which grossed roughly $270 million worldwide and turned the filmmaker into one of the studio’s most bankable names. That track record only grew this month, with Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot opening to the biggest debut of his career. Warner Bros. film chiefs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy signed off on the deal personally, and the studio’s announcement framed Lawrence as central to Cregger’s vision for the project going forward.

From a Netflix Stall to a 2028 Release
The Flood has had a winding path to this point. The project was originally set up at Netflix, but reportedly stalled there after Cregger pushed for a theatrical release and the streamer wouldn’t commit to one, sending the film to New Line instead. Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and Roy Lee and Miri Yoon’s Vertigo Entertainment are producing alongside New Line, and Warner Bros. has dated the film for August 11, 2028.
Plot details remain officially under wraps, and neither studio has said which character Lawrence will play. Early reports from earlier this year described the project as a deep-space set thriller drawing comparisons to Alien, but those descriptions were framed by journalists as secondhand characterizations rather than confirmed synopsis details, so it’s worth treating them as early speculation until New Line says otherwise. Cregger himself has only offered that the film leans less into pure horror than Barbarian or Weapons, while still aiming to be his most unsettling work yet.
With The Flood not expected in theaters until 2028, there’s plenty of time for New Line and Cregger to reveal more, including who else joins Lawrence in the cast. For now, the news cements Cregger’s rapid rise from horror indie darling to a filmmaker studios are willing to build around.
