Jimmy Olsen’s Gorilla Grodd Spinoff Wraps Filming Ahead of 2027 HBO Max Premiere
The Daily Planet’s strangest investigation just finished shooting. Skyler Gisondo confirmed this week that production has wrapped on HBO Max’s The People v. Gorilla Grodd, the Superman spinoff mockumentary that puts DC’s super-intelligent ape on trial in the court of public opinion. Gisondo shared the update with Collider’s Steven Weintraub at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival in Savannah, Georgia, where he was honored as one of this year’s Entertainment Weekly Breaking Big honorees.
It’s a Wrap on Gorilla Grodd’s Trial
Gisondo reprises Jimmy Olsen from James Gunn’s 2025 Superman, this time investigating whether Gorilla Grodd (Jimmy Tatro) was wrongfully convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City, in one of Metropolis’s most infamous trials. Asked how filming went, Gisondo kept plot details close to the chest but confirmed the shoot had officially closed: “It’s in the can, man.” American Vandal creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda write, direct, and executive produce the eight-episode comedy, and Gisondo praised the pair as ideal collaborators, teasing an approach to the DC Universe unlike anything seen before.
Where Gorilla Grodd Fits in the Superman Timeline
The series rounds out a returning Daily Planet ensemble, including Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White, alongside newcomers Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Andrew Leeds, Tim Baltz, and Sara Gilbert as an as-yet-unnamed Daily Planet journalist. The People v. Gorilla Grodd is set after Man of Tomorrow, James Gunn’s Superman sequel, and HBO Max won’t release it until after that film arrives in theaters on July 9, 2027. Gisondo is set to reprise Jimmy Olsen there too, alongside upcoming roles in the comedy sequel Focker-in-Law and Shrek 5.

Man of Tomorrow, James Gunn’s Superman sequel, sets the release marker for The People v. Gorilla Grodd, which won’t premiere until after the film’s July 2027 debut.
With no release date yet announced, the show has now moved into post-production. Its unusual pairing of true crime formatting and superhero lore just took a big step closer to the Daily Planet’s front page.
