The Last of Us Part 2’s Fan-Made Multiplayer Mod Is Cancelled After a Letter From Sony

A fan-made multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part II is not coming out after all. The project, built by a solo modder known as Speclizer since January 2026, was scheduled to launch this month on PC, but its creator announced this week that Sony Interactive Entertainment sent a letter asking for the mod not to be released, and that the project is now cancelled.

What Speclizer Was Building

The mod was built primarily as a PvP experience running on top of The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PC, with Speclizer noting that adding NPCs and enemy AI would have made the project far harder to finish, though some reports also mention a co-op mode among the plans. Development updates posted regularly on YouTube over roughly eight months built up a steady following, with the final progress video reaching more than 110,000 views before the cancellation. According to those updates, the mod was set to include:

  • A Team Deathmatch mode built specifically for the project
  • Custom loadouts and perks not found in the base game
  • A wave-based survival mode inspired by Part II Remastered’s own No Return roguelike mode
  • New maps not present in the original console release

The Letter That Ended It

Speclizer broke the news to followers this week, saying the message came on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment and asked that the mod not be released. No reason was given publicly, and neither Sony nor developer Naughty Dog has issued an official statement on the cancellation. Speclizer’s reaction was blunt: “Extremely sad that this never got to see the light of day.”

As an unofficial project built entirely on someone else’s intellectual property, the mod always existed at Sony’s discretion, and the company was within its rights to ask for it to be shelved regardless of the reasoning. Still, the timing stings for a community project that had been public and openly in development for roughly eight months without incident until its release was imminent. Some outlets have also pointed out that the mod was partly funded through Patreon, and speculate that the monetization, rather than the mod itself, may be what prompted Sony’s letter, though that remains speculation since Sony hasn’t explained its reasoning.

Naughty Dog Still Doesn’t Have an Answer of Its Own

The cancellation lands awkwardly given Naughty Dog’s own history with multiplayer for this franchise. The studio scrapped its originally planned Part II multiplayer mode back in 2019 to focus on the single-player campaign, then pivoted to a bigger, standalone live-service project called The Last of Us Online in 2022, only to cancel that as well in December 2023. The original Factions mode from the first game remains playable on PS4, but it was never carried over into the 2022 PS5 remake. Years later, there’s still no official multiplayer option for Part II at all, fan-made or otherwise.

It has also been an uneven few days for the wider franchise, with Neil Druckmann publicly distancing Naughty Dog from HBO’s Last of Us Season 3 just last week. Between that and now this, Naughty Dog’s relationship with the wider world built around its biggest franchise looks more complicated than ever.

Our Take

Fan projects built on beloved, dormant multiplayer ideas are a gamble from day one, and Sony enforcing its IP rights here isn’t surprising on its own. What makes this one sting is the gap it highlights: almost a decade after Part II shipped, there is still no official way to play a Last of Us multiplayer mode on modern hardware, official or otherwise. Until Naughty Dog or Sony fills that gap themselves, stories like Speclizer’s are likely to keep repeating.
