What Is Borderlands 4?
Borderlands 4 is the latest installment in Gearbox’s iconic looter-shooter franchise, known for its vibrant cel-shaded art, over the top action and billions of procedurally generated guns.
Set to release on September 12, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store) and October 3, 2025, for Nintendo Switch 2, this game takes players to the dystopian planet of Kairos. Expect cooperative mayhem, innovative gameplay mechanics like grappling hooks and hoverbikes and a massive open world, the largest in the series’ history.
With a revamped loot system, enhanced co-op features and a new villain, Borderlands 4 promises to be the most ambitious entry yet.
Why It’s a Big Deal
- Next-Gen Power: Built exclusively for current-gen consoles and PC, Borderlands 4 boasts larger worlds, smoother frame rates and dynamic interactions.
- New Mechanics: The Licensed Parts system lets you mix weapon traits from different manufacturers, while the Enhancements gear slot augments your guns for personalized builds.
- Co-Op Focus: Team up with up to three friends for seamless cooperative gameplay, perfect for tackling tough bosses and exploring Kairos.
Story Overview: From Pandora to Kairos
The Borderlands series has always blended chaotic action with darkly humorous narratives. Here’s a quick recap of the story so far and how Borderlands 4 fits in:
- Borderlands (2009): The original game introduced the planet Pandora, where Vault Hunters sought ancient alien Vaults filled with treasure.
The story followed four Vault Hunters (Roland, Lilith, Mordecai and Brick) as they battled bandits and uncovered the secrets of the Eridian Vault. - Borderlands 2 (2012): The fan-favorite sequel brought Handsome Jack, a charismatic yet ruthless villain, who aimed to control Pandora through the Hyperion Corporation.
New Vault Hunters (Maya, Salvador, Axton and Zer0) fought to stop him, with iconic DLCs like Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep. - Borderlands 3 (2019): The Calypso Twins, Troy and Tyreen, led a cult to unlock Vaults across the galaxy. Vault Hunters (Amara, Moze, Zane and FL4K) teamed up with returning characters like Lilith to save the universe.
- Borderlands 4 (2025): Set on the new planet Kairos, Borderlands 4 introduces the Timekeeper, a dystopian villain who uses cybernetic implants to oppress the planet’s population.
You’ll play as one of four Vault Hunters leading a resistance to overthrow this tyrant.
The story promises the series’ signature mix of humor, satire and high stakes action, with new zones like the frozen Terminus Range and post-launch story packs like Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned.
Who Are the Vault Hunters?
Borderlands 4 launches with four unique Vault Hunters, each with distinct abilities, skill trees and playstyles. Here’s the full roster revealed :

Rafa the Exo-Soldier
Harlowe the Gravitar
Harlowe the Gravitar
Amon the Forgeknight
Vex the Siren
- Vex the Dark Siren: A fan-favorite Siren archetype, Vex wields supernatural powers to summon Reapers and Spectres for kinetic and elemental damage.
Her skills include life draining attacks and summoning a spectral cat named Trouble, making her ideal for crowd control. - Rafa the Exo-Soldier: A former Tediore soldier raised in microgravity, Rafa relies on an experimental exosuit with energy blades, laser guns and shoulder cannons.
His fast paced, witty combat style suits players who love tactical, high-tech gameplay. - Harlowe the Gravitar: A cheerful ex-Maliwan scientist from the Traunt family, Harlowe manipulates gravity to hurl enemies and unleash chaos with gadgets like a destructive disco ball weapon.
Her abilities offer creative crowd control options. - Amon the Forgeknight: A tragic warrior raised by a Vault monster worshipping cult, Amon seeks revenge with drones fused to his body, summoning weapons like swords, axes and shields.
His poetic, melee focused style is perfect for aggressive players.
Post-launch, two additional Vault Hunters will be introduced via DLC Story Packs in 2026, with the first arriving in Q1 as part of Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned.
