Xbox Says GTA 6 Cloud Streaming Won’t Be Exclusive, or Come to PC, After All

Less than 24 hours after we reported that Xbox had landed exclusive cloud streaming rights for Grand Theft Auto VI, the story changed. Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball posted on X that the original report, from The Verge’s Tom Warren, overstated the deal, and that GTA 6 will not be streaming exclusively through Xbox Cloud Gaming, or coming to PC through the service, after all.

Where the Confusion Started

The original report traced back to an internal Xbox all-hands meeting, where CEO Asha Sharma reportedly told employees that Microsoft was preparing something around GTA 6 that no other platform holder was doing. Sources described the plan to The Verge as an exclusive streaming deal that would have let PC, mobile and handheld players stream Rockstar’s game through Xbox Cloud Gaming at launch, since GTA 6 is officially coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s all-hands comments about GTA 6 were the spark behind the original streaming rights report.

Xbox’s Correction

Ball’s statement didn’t dispute that Microsoft is doing something around GTA 6, just the scope of it. He wrote that the excitement had led to misreporting, and that Xbox is looking forward to launching the game on November 19, while confirming “the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC.” Tom Warren updated his original Verge story shortly after, writing that the streaming rights deal “appears to be more complicated than I originally reported.”

What This Actually Means for PC Players

With the correction in place, there is currently no confirmed way to play GTA 6 on PC at launch, whether through streaming or a native port. Rockstar still lists the game as a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S exclusive on November 19, and nothing in Ball’s statement suggests that is changing. It is also still unclear what, if anything, Xbox and Rockstar actually agreed to around cloud streaming, since Ball’s wording only ruled out exclusivity and PC access rather than explaining what the original all-hands comments were about.
