Madden Trailer Sends Nicolas Cage and Christian Bale Onto the Field, Setting Up a November Release on Prime Video

Amazon MGM Studios has released the first full trailer for Madden, the biopic tracing NFL legend John Madden’s journey from Super Bowl-winning Oakland Raiders coach to America’s most famous football broadcaster to, for Gamersuniverse readers especially, the co-creator of the Madden NFL video game franchise. The film hits select theaters on November 11 before premiering globally on Prime Video on November 18, a deliberate theatrical-then-streaming rollout built around awards-season eligibility.

Nicolas Cage Goes All In on Madden, Christian Bale Plays Al Davis

Directed by David O. Russell, the film stars Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage as John Madden opposite Christian Bale as maverick Raiders owner Al Davis, marking Bale’s fourth collaboration with Russell after The Fighter, American Hustle, and Amsterdam. The trailer leans hard into Russell’s signature exaggerated period style, and Bale’s Davis gets one of its sharper lines, telling Madden “It’s a sin not to use your gift” as he pushes him back toward football.

Kathryn Hahn plays Madden’s wife Virginia and Sienna Miller plays Davis’s wife Carol, rounding out the two central couples of the film.

From the Sidelines to the Video Game Pitch Meeting

The back half of the trailer shifts to the part of Madden’s story Gamersuniverse readers will care about most: the creation of the Madden NFL video game. John Mulaney plays EA founder Trip Hawkins, pitching the concept to Madden with the line “This is it! This is the future!” while Cage’s Madden, reviewing an early design with far fewer players on the field than a real NFL roster, fires back with “You only have seven men on a team, and I’m out!” It’s a fittingly stubborn introduction for a coach whose insistence on realism is exactly why the Madden NFL series became known for its simulation depth in the first place.

The supporting cast rounds out with Joel Murray as Madden’s broadcast partner Pat Summerall and Shane Gillis in an original supporting role. Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, Jonathan Shukat, Russell, Matthew Budman, and Colin Wilson produce, with Michael Strahan among the executive producers.

With its trailer, cast, and dual release dates now locked in, Madden arrives in select theaters on November 11 and on Prime Video worldwide on November 18.
