Marshals Season 2 Premiere Reveals the Barn Fire That Killed Garrett Was No Accident

Marshals is back, and CBS’s Yellowstone spin-off wasted no time raising the stakes. Season 2 premiered Sunday, October 4, 2026, with the episode “All Hat No Cattle,” and it opened with a kidnapping plot, a near-drowning, and a recap-worthy twist about a death that haunted all of Season 1.

A Kidnapping Dressed Up as a Fishing Trip

The premiere centers on villain Tom Weaver, who lures Kayce Dutton’s son Tate away under the guise of a fishing trip and uses him as leverage to force Kayce into giving up the East Camp property. The plan is to make Tate’s death look like an accidental drowning, clearing the way for Weaver’s land grab. Kayce goes rogue to get his son back before the Marshals can catch up, and the rescue comes down to the wire before the boy is pulled to safety.

Garrett’s Death Gets Rewritten

The premiere also reopens a wound from Season 1: the barn fire that killed Garrett Garvey, Kayce’s former Navy SEAL teammate played by country musician Riley Green. It was treated as a tragic accident at the time. In “All Hat No Cattle,” the Marshals turn up evidence that one of Weaver’s own ranch hands started that fire, tying Garrett’s death directly to the same East Camp scheme now threatening Kayce’s family. What looked like bad luck turns out to have been murder all along.

An Echo of Yellowstone

The premiere also leans on Kayce’s history from Yellowstone, where he tracked down Grant Horton, the man responsible for his father John Dutton’s death, and chose to let him live rather than take revenge, a decision that split fans at the time. Facing down Weaver in the Season 2 premiere puts Kayce in a similar spot. After Weaver’s daughter Dolly dies when their escape attempt ends in a crash, Weaver himself survives and all but begs Kayce to finish him off. Kayce refuses again, leaving Weaver to live with what his scheme cost him instead.

A Season Built on Record Numbers

CBS had every reason to bring Marshals back quickly. The Season 1 premiere drew roughly 9.52 million live-plus-same-day viewers and climbed to about 20.6 million within a week, a run TheWrap reported made it the most-streamed episode in Paramount+ history at the time. CBS renewed the show for Season 2 after just two episodes, with Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach crediting its launch as “one of TV’s most powerful new series.” Season 2 also welcomes Jefferson White back to the Yellowstone universe in a recurring role as Jimmy Hurdstrom, the character he played across the original series.

Not every reaction has been glowing. At least one critic pointed out that the Season 1 finale teased a crossover with the Dutton Ranch spinoff, Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler included, that never showed up in the premiere, keeping the action in Wyoming instead. Episode 2 airs October 11 on CBS and Paramount+.
