Rob Lowe Says the St. Elmo’s Fire Sequel Script Is Coming in October
Rob Lowe gave his most concrete update yet on a potential St. Elmo’s Fire sequel during a solo appearance on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on September 27, telling host Andy Cohen the follow-up to the 1985 Brat Pack classic “is definitely in the works, for sure.” According to Lowe, the original cast is eager to return, and a new script draft is reportedly expected the first week of October.
A Four-Decade Reunion in the Works
The 1985 original followed seven Georgetown University graduates navigating life, love, and adulthood in Washington, D.C., and starred Lowe as Billy Hicks alongside Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Andrew McCarthy, and Mare Winningham. Directed by Joel Schumacher, who later helmed Batman Forever and The Lost Boys, and released by Columbia Pictures, now part of Sony Pictures, the film became one of the defining coming-of-age movies of its era and helped cement the “Brat Pack” label for its young ensemble.
Rob Lowe, who played Billy Hicks in the original 1985 film, says the whole cast wants to return for a sequel.
Not the First Update, But the Most Specific One
Lowe has been teasing a possible follow-up for years. Sony was reportedly already in the “very early stages” of exploring a reunion back in 2024, and Andrew McCarthy’s 2024 documentary Brats, which revisited the Brat Pack era, only added more momentum to the idea. Lowe gave a similar update on The Kelly Clarkson Show in June, saying “I’m trying to get it done, but I’m excited” about where the script stood. This time, though, he attached an actual timeline to the process instead of just general enthusiasm.
No studio has officially greenlit a sequel, and there’s still no confirmed story details, returning cast beyond Lowe’s own comments, or release window. But with a new script draft reportedly due within days, St. Elmo’s Fire fans finally have a concrete next step to watch for.
